Pamela Geller launches complaint against York police chief and officer

York Regional Police (YRP) Chief Eric Jolliffe and Inspector Ricky Veerappan are under investigation by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) following a complaint by Pamela Geller. She was scheduled to speak at the Chabad@Flamingo Synagogue last May but Rabbi Mendel Kaplan rescinded permission for the use of his shul almost at the last minute. This behaviour is intolerable from a police officer, whose job is to protect the citizenry, not to censor points of view he dislikes,” said Geller. “This case is important for the freedom of speech.”

Via Rail security: more baggage checks, sniffer dogs, background traces under consideration

Taking a train in Canada could soon become more like boarding an airplane as Via Rail considers greater scrutiny of checked baggage, more inspections by sniffer dogs and security checks on passengers. The measures -- outlined in documents released under the Access to Information Act -- are being considered in direct response to the alleged terrorist plot to derail a train.

Islamist Group in America: We’ll Impose Sharia on Christians

Hizb ut-Tahrir, a group so radical that the Muslim Brotherhood won’t even touch it, lives and breathes in America. Part of the reason it’s a fringe group in the U.S. is because it is mostly honest about its objectives. For example, one of its websites answers a question about the status of Christians in an Islamic State by frankly admitting that Sharia is imposed upon them and other non-Muslims.

Obama says that Al Qaeda is vanquished. The reality is that al Qaeda has never been stronger. Obama says that Al Qaeda has been all but destroyed, but its satellites are alive and kicking. Halal: A Taste of Terror

Whenever you buy one of the many halal-certified products increasingly found in our Western countries, even without your knowledge and against your will, you are indirectly contributing to Islamic terrorists, killers of Christians in the Middle East, al-Qaeda-linked groups and so on. Buy halal and you fund jihad against Israel.

To get an idea of the extent of this phenomenon, one of the most influential halal certification bodies, the Halal Food Authority, now estimates that a staggering 25% of the entire UK meat market is halal. But Muslims are about 5% of the UK population, therefore there is as much as 5 times more halal meat than Muslims.

An Island in Revolt: A Window into Europe’s Future

Zanzibar: two British charity volunteers injured in acid attack

Two men on moped threw acid at female volunteers, both 18, as they walked through east African island's capital Zanzibar City. The volunteers, both 18 and from London, were walking through the old part of the main island's capital, Zanzibar City, on Wednesday night when two men on a moped threw acid at them.

They similarly had no complaints when media reports showed that many in Egypt's Coptic Christian minority was barred from voting in December's constitutional referendum by Brotherhood activists

The Mass Jailing of Turkish Secularists

Monday, August the 4th, was one of the most important days in modern Turkish history. Two hundred seventy-five (275) individuals known to be secularists stood trial for supposedly planning a military coup. In the end, some 200 of them were convicted, with many receiving lifelong sentences. As written last week: “That’s why the freedom of speech may not only be on trial in Turkey, but may very well have already been sentenced to death. The prosecution and the judge want to end its life, and dissenting jurors, who understand what is at stake, are too afraid to intervene on the defendant’s behalf.”

Freedom to Criticize

It seems that increasingly, especially when it comes to Islamism, there are those in the West who work to silence the critic rather than the criminal, and often more attention is paid to the critics of extremists than to the extremists themselves. It is true that our enemy's enemy is not necessarily our friend, but we need not apply such double standards in our response.

If we are to defend free expression -- in spite of its use as a platform for extremist views -- it should not be promoted on a selective basis, but rather for everyone, on all sides of a dispute. While providing opportunities for defense, offence and rebuttal for all may seem like an elementary idea, it has been both abused and neglected.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an organization of 56 Muslim states and the Palestinian Authority, has been trying for more than a decade to win UN-wide support of a resolution that calls on nations to prohibit speech that allegedly "defames" religion. In the past, the United States has opposed such resolutions, correctly asserting that they are contrary to our First Amendment right of free speech.

In 2011, at the U.S.'s request, the OIC drafted a new resolution that would supposedly balance America's constitutional protection of free speech with OIC concerns about "Islamophobia."  This resolution passed, with U.S. backing. This new resolution, UN Resolution 16/18, no longer uses language such as "defamation," but instead uses European-style hate speech language that has been used to criminalize speech critical of Islam in countries such as Austria and the Netherlands.
