I have wonderful news.

In May 2014, I began publicising Network For Animals renewed focus on Horse Fighting in the Philippines. As you know, this is a vile 'sport' in which two beautiful stallions are made to fight brutally over a poor mare, paraded in front of them as the 'prize'.

Over a weekend 'fiesta' of horse fighting, tens, even hundreds of male horses are violently wounded, and a handful of females are subjected to rape after rape. Whilst this happens, the sound of cheering reverberates through the makeshift arena, from a crowd made up of gamblers, local criminals, elected officials, families, even small children. We are battling a cruelty that is truly ingrained in their society.

In May, I set to work province by province to close down this spectacle for good. I began with a petition to the elected Governor of the province of Bukidnon. More than 18,000 wonderful people like yourself filled it in. My team followed up the petition, and the Mayor has taken action in a huge way:
He has banned horse fighting from his province.

Taking a stance against Horse Fighting means moving against organised crime in an area where gun carrying is the norm, not the exception. The Mayor has personally closed down two fights which were already scheduled and invested in. A brave move indeed.

Unfortunately, with good news comes bad.

We have learned that since the Governor's ban, and the closure of these fights, there has been a further event scheduled. It is to be in the remote town Kabanglasan, Bukidnon, Sept 16-18, and almost all those involved in organising previous fights are to take their horses, and their money, to this new venue.

I ask you today, to give thanks to Jose Maria Zubiri Jr for his bold actions so far. He is a brave man. And I ask you, politely, to encourage him to take action on this further fight.
