Soros-Funded Group Behind Course for Journalists That Downplays 'Jihad'

Program launched to teach press about Muslim sensitivities blames 'right-wing activists.' (hat tip Brandy)

A new course on Islam designed for journalists tries to minimize the impact and importance of ''jihad'' by comparing it to the number of murders in America each year. That same course claims ''right-wing activists'' tried to tie American Muslims to terrorism and doesn't mention examples of Islamic attacks on press freedom.

That's the way a prominent news organization is teaching journalists in a three-hour online course. The Poynter News University, part of the Poynter Institute, launched the free course ''Covering Islam in America'' to guide the media on their coverage of Muslim communities.

The George Soros-funded Social Science Research Council, which received $50,000 from the Open Society Institute ''For Initiative on HIV/AIDS and Social Transformation,'' is one of the groups behind the initiative, along with the Edward R. MurrowCollege of Communication at Washington State University. That fits with a theme for liberal financier Soros, who has spent more than $52 million on influencing the media. The Islamic course also links to another Soros-funded entity, the well-financed Center for American Progress.

In about 30 pages of text with links to other reports and articles, journalists can go through and read about the history of Islam, Muslims in America, and how to cover stories on Islam. Besides learning basic facts about Muslims and their history, the courseadds ways to put ''jihad'' into perspective, attack conservatives, and provide a list of liberal groups that can be contacted for expert advice and quotes.

The pre and post-assessments give a hint as to the nature of the course. One question asked, ''What grievances might sources associated with 'Political Islam' hold against Western journalists?'' The answer is that ''Western journalists are seen as all of the following: ''hostile to Islam,'' ''focus too much on Islamic violence,'' ''viewed as water carriers for Western government agendas,'' and ''thought to be unable to understand Islam unless they embrace Islam.''

Course instructors Lawrence Pintak and Stephen Franklin are both former foreign correspondents. Pintak serves as dean at The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University, which is a partner of the project. He also has two books on journalism and Islam and defends the biased, activist network Al Jazzera English.

This course is ''A project of The Poynter Institute funded by The Knight Foundation.'' Soros's Open Society Foundations have worked closely with The Knight Foundation. They partnered up to start the Investigative News Network, which received $200,000 from the Knight Foundation and $100,000 from the Open Society Foundations. The Knight Foundations President and CEO, Alberto Ibarguen, is also on the board for AOL and yet another key Soros backed group, the progressive investigative reporting start-up ProPublica.

There is some useful information in the Islamic course for those journalists that did not pay attention in their history classes and are ignorant of Islamic beliefs. However, this does not excuse statements that accuse conservatives of bigotry.

The reports that journalists are told to look at to uncover the ''right-wing activists'' agenda are even more telling. The first is a report from none other than the Soros-funded progressive group Center for American Progress, which received $7.3 million from the Open Society Foundations since the year 2000.

Fear, Inc.: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America, details charitable groups that ''spent almost $43 million financing anti-Muslim campaigns.'' One of the coauthors of the report is the Koch-hating Lee Fang, who writes for Center's left-wing blog Think Progress. Fang continuously goes after the Koch brothers for their contributions to conservatives and Tea Party support.

The other report is by The Tennessean in Nashville titled Anti-Muslim Crusaders Make Millions Spreading Fear. This article details the story of ''activists who have raised millions of dollars after they convinced donors that the nation's Muslim population posed a security threat.''

Another section of the course also encourages journalists to add context to their stories. They note it is important to explain political motives stating ''Politicians do not oppose or support proposed mosques and other Muslim-American projects without taking into account their own interests.''

One of the more offensive statements is that ''context is essential in covering this global story in a way that does not amplify fears of jihad.'' Journalists ''are far more likely to report on jihad-related incidents than other violence' which gives people a ''skewed impression of the prevalence of jihad.''

Hamas US affiliate, CAIR, has once again showed its true face, unmosqued. The killing of Anwar al-Awlaki is one of the great victories in jihad's war in America. Show them some love today!

The enemy within is agitating against this victory in defense of freedom. Hamas-linked CAIR is agitating for jihad: "While a voice of hate has been eliminated, we urge our nation's leaders to address the constitutional issues raised by the assassination of American citizens without due process of law."

Anwar Al-Awlaki was the imam to jihad. Anwar al-Awlaki provided for spiritual guidance for the 911 Muslim terrorists at the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Va. (the subject of a Congressional probe). Al-Awlaki inspired the Fort Hood jihadi, Maj. Nidal Hasan, who is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, and the devout Muslim who pled guilty to the Times Square bombing attempt. Al-Awlaki was also said to have been involved in mail bombs addressed to Chicago-area synagogues, packages intercepted in Dubai and Europe in October 2010.

So slick was al-Awlaki that he was invited to dine at the Pentagon as a guest of the Department of Defense, more than once. We see this repeatedly. The violent jihad and the stealth jihad, deceiving to advance Islam. The NY Times loved this killer.

And this is the same deception that unindicted co-conspirator CAIR engages in to advance Islamic supremcism and destroy our infidel freedoms.

By their fruits we shall know them, and so we know CAIR. The US Department of Justice scuttled the prosecution of Muslim Brotherhood groups named in the largest Hamas terror funding trial in our nation's history. CAIR was one of them. GOP candidates must campaign on the promise to pursue those prosecutions.

This just went out in the "American Muslim News Briefs" email from the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR):

CAIR: Al-Awlaki's Calls to Violence Rejected by U.S. Muslims Civil rights group concerned about constitutional issues raised by assassination of American citizen

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/30/11) -- A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today reiterated that the calls to violence made by Anwar al-Awlaki, who has reportedly been killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen, have been firmly rejected by American Muslims.

In a statement reacting to al-Awlaki's death, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:

"As we have stated repeatedly in the past, the American Muslim community firmly repudiated Anwar al-Awlaki's incitement to violence, which occurred after he left the United States. While a voice of hate has been eliminated, we urge our nation's leaders to address the constitutional issues raised by the assassination of American citizens without due process of law." You got it, Ibe. But once again Hamas-linked CAIR reveals its true colors. It denounces al-Awlaki as a "voice of hate" (note that that is the same language it uses of anti-jihadists who, unlike al-Awlaki, never conspired with anyone to commit mass murder or approved of any kind of violence), but is "concerned" that "constitutional issues" have been "raised by the assassination of American citizens without due process of law."

Anwar al-Awlaki was an American citizen, yes. He was also a traitor. He was waging war against his native country. He was an enemy combatant. If an American citizen had gone to Germany and joined the Wehrmacht in 1942, and was killed in battle against American forces, would anyone have been raising "constitutional issues" over the killing?

American-born al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was killed Friday by a U.S. airstrike in Yemen, administration officials say.

Awlaki, 40, was among the terrorist group's most charismatic figures, expanding al-Qaida's violent theology to a new pool of potential recruits by speaking and writing in English. He also was tied to a series of attacks, including the Fort Hood massacre and the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009. An Associated Press dispatch calls the strike "the biggest U.S. success in hitting al-Qaida's leadership since the May killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan."

He was the most visible figure in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, an al-Qaida affiliate considered the most dangerous and capable of carrying out terrorist attacks.

The strike hit a convoy carrying Awlaki and his bodyguards and may have been the result of cooperation from elements within Awlaki's own tribe.

"This is an extraordinary victory, a great moment for the United States. Al-Awlaki, has become more dangerous than bin Laden," U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told Politico. "Over the last year, he's become the No. 1 terrorist in the world."

Another AP report indicates the attack killed a second American; former North Carolina resident Samir Khan, dealing a crushing blow to the al-Qaida affiliate's global recruiting operation. Khan published seven issues of Inspire magazine, the latest earlier this week. A slick publication with high quality graphics, Inspire offered a mix of articles glorifying jihad, offering religious justification for attacks and providing detailed instructions for "lone wolf" terrorists to wage attacks inside the United States.

A similar report of Awlaki's death in late 2009 turned out to be false. In this case, senior government officials have confirmed the attack and briefed congressional leaders like King. Officials also are hoping to match Awlaki's DNA with relatives still living in Virginia.

Before leaving America in 2002, Awlaki was considered a moderate voice. After the 9/11 attacks, National Public Radio cast him as someone who could "build bridges between Islam and the West," and a voice for moderation. He was even invited to give a presentation at the Pentagon in February 2002. But, as the Investigative Project on Terrorism reported last year, recorded sermons from that era show he already was spreading a radical message inside the United States.

Pakistan: Family under threat for refusing to kill daughter in honor killing over gang rape

Needless to say, it is a sick, dysfunctional society in which not blaming the victim is a crime. "Refusing to Kill Daughter, Pakistani Family Defies Tradition, Draws Anger," from The Atlantic, September 28:

KARACHI, PAKISTAN -- Kainat Soomro is a 17-year-old Pakistani girl who has become a local celebrity of sorts in her battle for justice in the Pakistani courts, a daring move for a woman of any age in this country, let alone a teenager. She is fighting to get justice for a gang rape that she insists happened four years ago in Mehar, a small town in Pakistan.

We first met her in the office of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. A colorful traditional Pakistani shawl covered her head. Her father sat next to her as she recounted the 2007 incident.

"I was walking home from my school and I went to the store to buy a toy for my niece," she said, staring at the floor of the office. "While I was looking at things a guy pressed a handkerchief on my nose. I fainted and was kidnapped. Then four men gang raped me."

As she shared details of her days in captivity and multiple rapes, she kept repeating, "I want justice, I will not stop until I get justice." After three days, she was finally able to escape she said. As she spoke, her father gently tapped her head. He said he tried to get Kainat's alleged rapists arrested, but instead he was rebuffed by the police.

According to the Kainat family's account, the tribal elders declared her kari, (which literally means black female), for losing her virginity outside marriage.

In Pakistan, women and men who have illicit relationships or women who lose their virginity before marriage are at risk of paying with their lives.

"These are matters of honor and the leaders call a jirga and they declare that the woman or the couple should be killed," said Abdul Hai, a veteran field officer for the Human Rights Commission in Pakistan. These acts of violence are most commonly labeled as "honor killings."

The most recent report from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan noted that in 2009 roughly 46 percent of all female murders in Pakistan that year were in the name of "honor." The report noted that a total of 647 incidences of "honor killings" were reported by the Pakistani press. However, experts say that actual incidences of "honor killings" in Pakistan are much higher and never get reported to the police because they are passed off by the families as suicides.

Kainat said that despite the pressures her family refused to kill her.

"It is the tradition, but if the family doesn't permit it, then it won't happen. My father, my brother, my mom didn't allow it," she said.

And that defiance has left the family fearing for their lives. The family's new home in Karachi has been attacked a number of times.

But, according to Abdul Hai, Kainat is lucky: "The woman or the girl usually gets killed and the man gets away," he said. "Over 70 percent of the murdered victims are women and only 30 percent of victims of honor killings are male."

In Karachi, Kainat and her family are now sharing one room in a run-down apartment block, and they have to rely on charities to help them pay for food.

"We go hungry many nights," said Kainat's older sister.

But their fight might never pay off. A local judge has already ruled against Kainat in the case. "There is no corroborative evidence available on record. The sole testimony of the alleged rape survivor is not sufficient," the judge said in a written decision.

Another problem is that material evidence is usually not collected in rape cases in Pakistan since the police rarely believe rape victims and therefore don't order rape kits in a timely manner.

Without medical tests to corroborate her story, it remains Kainat's word against the alleged rapists. But even having lost her case at the local court, Kainat insists, "I am not giving up, I will take this all the way to the Supreme Court of Pakistan."
