I write to request your financial support for the Middle East Forum, the think tank I founded and direct.
The Forum offers insights and policy advice for some of the hottest topics of the day: U.S. foreign policy issues concerning Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. It combats radical Islam. It critiques the substandard work of Middle East studies. It protects those of us who write, draw, and speak about Islamic topics. It tracks and fights the advance of lawful Islamists through the system.
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce three of my colleagues working on these topics:
RAYMOND IBRAHIM, the Forum's associate director, is a specialist on the ideological roots of Islamist violence. His Al Qaeda Reader established that the group's terror campaign is driven, not by political grievances, but by orthodox interpretations of Islam. He has explained the subtle but important differences between Judeo-Christian violence and Muslim violence. In the wake of the Fort Hood massacre, Ibrahim published an analysis showing how Nidal Hasan's words and actions conformed to traditional Islamic doctrines. Most recently, his publications on deception in Islamic warfare and his unique views on the Ground Zero mosque and the plight of Egypt's Copts all broke new ground.
EFRAIM KARSH, a professor at King's College London and editor of our Middle East Quarterly, is the preeminent historian of the Middle East today. His books have challenged well-established paradigms, including the widespread belief that Middle Easterners in modern times were hapless victims of predatory imperial powers, when in fact they were "active participants in the restructuring of their region"—a shift with vast political implications. His latest book, Palestine Betrayed, reframes today's Arab-Israeli debate by demonstrating that Arabs aborted the Palestinian state, causing the "Nakba."
STEVEN J. ROSEN, formerly of AIPAC and now director of the Forum's Washington Project, influences U.S. policy through publications and in-person contacts. His insider-knowhow was displayed when he played a leading role in derailing an unfit nominee to head the National Intelligence Council, and drove opposition to Barack Obama's demand for a settlement freeze. More recently, Rosen countered Peter Beinart's assault on Jewish leadership, exposed Turkey's Israel-baiting tactics, analyzed Obama's reluctance to use the Security Council veto on Israel's behalf, and explained how Europe is the real Arab lobby in Washington.
