Statement by UANI on IAEA Report
New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement regarding the IAEA Board of Governors' report, "Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement and relevant provisions of Security Council resolutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran":
The IAEA report on Iran fully confirms that the Iranian regime is charging forward on the path to possessing nuclear weapons, and will have them soon unless something is done. President Obama must now make clear to Iran's ruling theocracy, through public and private channels, that Tehran's illegal pursuit of nuclear weapons, support for terrorists, killing of U.S. troops, and plots against the U.S. must stop immediately, or Iran will face consequences including military retaliation for further acts of war.
President Obama should immediately sanction Iran's Central Bank - an action which has the support of 92 U.S. senators but has reportedly been tabled by the Obama administration. Sanctioning the Central Bank would sever Iran from the international banking system and hinder its ability to trade.
The Obama administration must also enforce existing provisions in Iranian energy sanctions, such as the certification requirement which bans companies that do business in Iran's oil sector from receiving U.S.-government contracts. Lawmakers in Washington should also close the foreign-subsidiary loophole in U.S. law, which some American companies are irresponsibly using to circumvent long-standing bans on trade with Iran.
