Surpassing Nigeria’s abominable Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, the country of Brunei is making death by stoning a possible punishment for homosexuality.
According to MSNBC, Brunei has decided to rewrite their penal code in accordance with Sharia law (a strict set of Islamic religious rules).
The first phase was enacted last Thursday, stating that citizens can be fined or imprisoned for things like missing Friday prayer, having a baby outside of marriage, practicing any religion that isn’t Islam and public displays of affection.
The next phase expected to go into effect includes more extreme punishments, such as flogging or amputation for committing pedophilia.
Finally, the last step would make death by stoning the appropriate punishment for homosexual activity, as well as rape and adultery.
The country’s prime minister Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah calls the law a “great achievement.”
“The decision to implement the (penal code) is not for fun but is to obey Allah’s command as written in the Quran,” he said.
Bolkiah does not hope the world will understand these extreme laws, but expects it to respect them.
However, the Bolkiah just so happens to control the investment group that owns the beloved Beverly Hills Hotel — something the people of Hollywood are not happy about.
Earlier this week, several celebrities protested the ownership of the famed haven in an attempt to bring awareness to the horrendous new law.
Jay Leno told CNN, “It’s not a political issue. This is not something that’s debatable… It’s people being stoned to death.”
Numerous organizations have moved their scheduled events from the hotel, and notables like Ellen DeGeneres have publicly denounced it.
But the investment group’s CEO Christopher Cowday says these actions are only hurting the hotel’s employees, not the Sultan.
He suggests lobbying the U.S. State Department, rather than protesting the hotel itself.
These frightening new changes aren’t the first of their kind, as Brunei is the seventh East Asian country to name the death penalty as punishment for being gay.
However, it’s the first in East Asia to adopt Sharia law.
MSNBC reports that homosexuality is criminalized to some degree in 80 nations around the world.
Here’s what the proposed punishment for homosexuality in Brunei could look like.
