BAGHDAD – The Islamic
State (IS) insurgents committed over 4 million crimes against Iraqi
civilians in the second half of 2014. Thousands of innocent people have
gone missing since the jihadists took over parts of the north and west
of Iraq.
Addressing a press conference in Kirkuk,
Iraqi Human Rights Minister Mohammed Mahdi al-Bayati declared that the
situation in the country is tragic.
“We have registered more than 4 million
crimes which IS militants conducted against civilians in the last six
months of 2014. 2,980 Iraqis have been missing since the IS rampage
started in the country in June last year,” al-Bayati said.
He pointed out international
organisations are working with Iraq’s Ministry of Human Rights to
register IS war crimes in the country. “The crimes consist of arming
children, massacres, the destruction of temples and other religious
sites, and the oppression of civilians in the areas under their
control.”
The Iraqi government has already
revealed that more than 3 million Iraqis have been forced to leave their
homes and flee to safer areas due to the extremists’ assaults.
