As G20
Gathers in Argentina, Iran's Threat Looms Large
(New
York, NY) - As the G20 prepares
to gather in Buenos Aires on November 30, United Against Nuclear Iran
(UANI) is calling on member nations to work collaboratively to
pressure the Iranian regime into abandoning its globally
destabilizing nuclear and terroristic pursuits. The theme for the
Argentine presidency of the G20 is "building consensus for fair
and sustainable development." But to have development requires
security, which Iran has consistently undermined.
Through the
years, Argentina has been rocked by Iranian-sponsored
terrorism. As recounted
by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at UANI's Iran Summit
in September, "[i]n Buenos Aires, Iran provided logistical
support for two suicide vehicle attacks -- one in 1992 and then again
in 1994. These attacks killed a total of 114 people and wounded
nearly 500, with the 1994 bombing being the deadliest terror attack
in the history of Argentina." Fast forward to 2018, and the
Iranian threat continues unabated. In November, Argentina arrested two of its citizens on suspicions of plotting a
Hezbollah attack on Israeli targets in Buenos Aires.
The G20's
influence lies in its convening power. The history of Buenos Aires
provides the perfect backdrop to continue the global conversation on
Iran. With five of the eight nations which received waivers from U.S.
energy sanctions on Iran participating -- Japan, China, Turkey, South
Korea, and India -- and with key global heavyweights like Saudi
Arabia and Russia in attendance, UANI urges the Trump administration
to continue its important work in forming a global consensus against
the status quo in Iran.
