Homeland Insecurity: The post-9/11 Capitol is like Fort Knox. Yet earlier this month, a convicted terrorist still under house arrest waltzed through that security rampart. Who's minding the fort?
A group lobbying to restore the Muslim Brotherhood to power in Cairo held a Dec. 5 briefing in the high-security Cannon Office Building on Capitol Hill.
The event, sponsored by the Egypt Freedom Foundation, featured speakers critical of the ouster of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.
The foundation, which according to the Investigative Project on Terrorism was incorporated in Washington on Oct. 1, recently helped organize another event at Georgetown University that featured a member of Egypt's Nazi Party.
Nice. The group's only listed officer is Ahmed Bedier, a longtime official with the terror-tied Council on American-Islamic Relations.
While it's bad enough such a radical group was allowed to organize an event at the Capitol, one of its guests of honor was none other than Sami al-Arian, the notorious Muslim Brotherhood terrorist who once bellowed during a speech at a Cleveland mosque:
"Let's damn America, let's damn Israel, let's damn their allies until death!"
In a 2006 plea deal, al-Arian, a Palestinian immigrant who admits membership in the Muslim Brotherhood, pleaded guilty to conspiring to aid terrorism. He agreed to cooperate in other terrorism investigations in exchange for a sentence of time served and deportation.
But in 2008, al-Arian reneged on his promise to cooperate with authorities investigating a Muslim Brotherhood terrorism fundraising ring in the Washington suburbs. He refused to testify before a grand jury. A federal judge held him in contempt, and he was placed under house arrest.
So how did he break house arrest and attend the Brotherhood function in the Capitol? His detention had been modified earlier this year to let him leave his home during non-curfew hours with a monitoring device.
The Brotherhood's little Capitol summit, which attracted about 30 participants, was also attended by Mahdi Bray, former head of what the FBI described as the Brotherhood's front organization in Washington — the Muslim American Society. Bray is a three-time felon and ex-con who's done serious time, according to the the "Muslim Mafia," a book that exposes the Brotherhood's fronts and operatives in America.
Bray has held fundraisers for convicted al-Qaida terrorists including Ahmed Abu Ali, who is serving a life sentence for plotting to assassinate President Bush.
How could this happen? Who reserved these Islamofascists and their terrorists and terror-supporting pals a room in the hallowed halls of Congress?
