As Refugees Flock to Kurdistan Region, Kurds Flee to Europe
Facing IS threats and economic crisis, Kurds leave for EU

ERBIL – People living
under the authority of Islamic State (IS) are attempting to escape the
brutality of the extremist group, and young Kurds are leaving the region
hoping in the hope of finding a better life in Europe.
BasNews understands that scores
internally displaced people (IDPs) have illegally crossed IS borders
into the Kurdistan Region, without being questioned or registered by the
Kurdish security forces. They have risked their lives to find sanctuary
in the region.
Deputy Head of the Kurdistan Region
Parliamentary Committee for Security Affairs Nazim Kabir told BasNews
that they have investigated the case and found that those who are
assisting people to flee IS authority are not human traffickers. “They
are locals who are helping their relatives find their way out.”
However, he said, it is important for
the KRG to tighten its borders as IS militants may disguise themselves
among the real IDPs.
Photographs have recently gone viral on
social media, showing a number of IDPs hidden under construction
materials on a lorry, allegedly trying to escape the IS stronghold of
Mosul. “The reports are not confirmed and they might have taken this
action merely to avoid the jihadists,” MP Kabir said.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)
officials are warning about the increasing number of Kurdish youths who
are heading to European countries, when only a few years ago Kurds were
returning home as the security and economic situation had improved.
Deputy Head of the Iraqi Federation of
Refugees Amanj Abdullah says that young Kurdish people started to leave
when the economic crisis began to affect daily life. “It can be called a
migration phenomena now.”
