Pakistan - Scores Killed In Bombing of Police Intelligence
Offices

Posted: 27 May 2009 12:37 AM PDT

A suicide car bomber targeted buildings housing police and intelligence agency

offices in eastern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing about 30 and wounding nearly

150 in one of the deadliest such blasts in the country this year, officials said.

The attack, which was followed by gunfire, was the third major strike in the city of

Lahore in recent months, and it came amid worries of retaliation from Taliban

militants facing a major Pakistani military offensive in the northwest.

Lahore is a major cultural metropolis near the Indian border, and assaults there

have heightened fears that militancy in Pakistan is spreading well beyond the

northwest region bordering Afghanistan.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s bombing.

FBI, Joint Terrorism Task Force Raid Chicago Apartment

Posted: 26 May 2009 11:47 PM PDT

Very little is being reported on a recent raid that resulted in 2 arrests, in Chicago.

A source in federal law enforcement told Fox Chicago that the case is similar to one
that unfolded in New York.

Glenda Johnson saw so many police and plain clothed federal agents on her block

that she thought someone had been shot.

“The police was so crowded, you couldn’t even walk past. They was in trucks, they

was in cars, they was in regular cars. It looked like someone had killed someone,” said
Johnson.

That swarm of badges consisted of the FBI, Chicago Police and the Joint Terrorism

Task Force. In their sights were two buildings on the 6300 block of North Artesian.
People who live in a six flat there say the feds were very interested in its basement,

specifically, two storage lockers.

A spokesperson for the FBI confirms a search warrant was executed at the building

as part of an ongoing investigation. Glenda Johnson says an FBI agent made the search
sound extremely urgent.

“They was looking for someone who lives in this building. So I was like ‘what’s the

cause?’ They said ‘we don’t want to say yet, but it’s a life and death situation.’ I was
like ‘wow,’” said Johnson.

Economic Crisis Creating Suburban Survivalists

Posted: 26 May 2009 11:45 PM PDT

Six months ago, Jim Wiseman didn’t even have a spare nutrition bar in his

kitchen cabinet.

Now, the 54-year-old businessman and father of five has a backup generator,

a water filter, a grain mill and a 4-foot-tall pile of emergency food tucked in his

home in the expensive San Diego suburb of La Jolla.

Wiseman isn’t alone. Emergency supply retailers and military surplus stores

nationwide have seen business boom in the past few months as an increasing

number of Americans spooked by the economy rush to stock up on gear that

was once the domain of hardcore survivalists.

Our recommended provider, Nitro-pak has ample supplies on hand at this time but suppliers are

warning that they may not be able to keep up with the demand if sales continue to surge. Nitro-pak

has been a preferred partner for many years now, offering the highest quality products at the guaranteed

lowest prices. Use this link, Nitro-pak Store if you order from them and you’ll also get free
shipping.

These people snapping up everything from water purification tablets to thermal

blankets shatter the survivalist stereotype: they are mostly urban professionals
with mortgages, SUVs, solid jobs and a twinge
of embarrassment about their

newfound hobby.

From teachers to real estate agents, these budding emergency gurus say the dismal

economy has made them prepare for financial collapse as if it were an oncoming
Category 5 hurricane. They worry about rampant inflation,
runs on banks, bare

grocery shelves and widespread power failures that could make taps run dry.

For Wiseman, a fire protection contractor, that’s meant spending roughly $20,000

since September on survival gear _ and trying to persuade others to do the same.

“The UPS guy drops things off and he sees my 4-by-8-by-6-foot pile of food and I

say ‘What are you doing to prepare, buddy?’” he said. “Because there won’t be a

thing left on any shelf of any supermarket in the country if people’s confidence

wavers.”

The surge in interest in emergency stockpiling has been a bonanza for camping

supply companies and military surplus vendors, some of whom report sales spikes

of up to 50 percent. These companies usually cater to people preparing for

earthquakes or hurricanes, but informal customer surveys now indicate the bump

is from first-time shoppers who cite financial, not natural, disaster as their primary

concern, they say.

Top sellers include 55-gallon water jugs, waterproof containers, freeze-dried foods,

water filters, water purification tablets, glow sticks, lamp oil, thermal blankets,
dust masks, first-aid kits and inexpensive tents.

Joe Branin, owner of the online emergency supply store Living Fresh, said he’s seen

a 700 percent increase in orders for water purification tablets in the past month and
a similar increase in orders for sterile water
pouches.

He is shipping meals ready to eat and food bars by the case to residential addresses
nationwide.

“You’re hearing from the people you will always hear from, who will build their own

bunkers and stuff,” he said. “But then you’re hearing from people who usually
wouldn’t think about this, but now it’s in
their heads: ‘What if something comes

to the worst?’”

Online interest in survivalism has increased too. The niche Web site SurvivalBlog.com

has seen its page views triple in the past 14 months to nearly 137,000 unique visitors

a week. Jim Rawles, a self-described survivalist who runs the site, calls the
newcomers “11th hour believers.” He charges
$100 an hour for phone consulting on

emergency preparedness and says that business also has tripled.

“There’s so many people who are concerned about the economy that there’s a huge

interest in preparedness, and it pretty much crosses all lines, social, economic, political

and religious,” he said. “There’s a steep learning curve going on right now.”

Obama Shakes Up White House Security Structure

Posted: 26 May 2009 11:10 PM PDT

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday ended the divide between national security

and homeland security staff in the White House, arguing the move would make
Americans safer.

Obama shook up the security structure of his teams of advisors after examining the

results of a study he ordered into how best to handle homeland security and
counter-terrorism efforts.

“I have carefully reviewed the findings and recommendations of that study, and am announcing a new approach which will strengthen our security and the safety of our

citizens,” Obama said in a statement.

“These decisions reflect the fundamental truth that the challenges of the 21st Century
are increasingly unconventional and transnational, and therefore demand a response

that effectively integrates all aspects of American power.”

The move will see the full integration of the White House National Security Council and

the Homeland Security Council to support all policy on international, transnational and homeland security issues.

Obama also decided to form new directorates and positions on the new National Security

Staff to cope with 21st Century threats including cybersecurity and possible terrorism

using weapons of mass destruction.

Brazil Detains Al Qaeda Suspect Who Ran Anti-American Web Site

Posted: 26 May 2009 11:02 PM PDT

Brazilian authorities detained an Arab who ran a Web site forum that could be

linked to terrorists and included anti-American statements in Arabic, a

prosecutor said Tuesday night.

The Arab resident of Brazil was not identified and a court ordered his release

after police investigated, federal prosecutor Ana Leticia Absy said in a statement.

Absy said Brazil police were alerted to the presence of the closed Web site by the

FBI, obtained judicial permission to investigate it and concluded it could be connected

“to a terrorist group.”

But Absy stressed in a statement that no evidence has been uncovered suggesting

the moderator was actually a member of a terrorist group. The statement was issued

after a columnist for the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported Tuesday that the man

was suspected of being a member of Al Qaeda. Prior to the statement’s release, a

federal police spokeswoman confirmed for The Associated Press that the man was

suspected of being a key player in Al Qaeda’s international communications. She spoke on

condition of anonymity, in keeping with department policy.

Assault Rifle Parts And Ammo Found In Austin Dumpster

Posted: 26 May 2009 10:54 PM PDT

Assorted parts from assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition Tuesday

were found stashed in a North Austin dumpster.

Austin police say someone noticed the weapons inside the dumpster outside the
Contempo
Apartments 5000 block of Swanee near Lamar and Airport Blvd.
around 11:30 a.m.

Austin police officers and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and

Firearms pulled the upper receivers of eight assault rifles and box after box
of ammunition. It took several hours
to collect and inspect.

People who live on the dead-end street watched with worry.

“It’s so quiet out here you hardly ever think of anything like that,” said Richard

Marquez.

Marquez has lived at a house a few yards from the dumpster for several

decades. He watched in shock on Tuesday as agents wrapped the gun parts in

white pieces of cloth and tucked them into the trunk of a patrol car.

“Who put it there? That’s the scary part. We still live here with our windows open

and sit out here in the afternoon,” said Marquez.

Detectives don’t know who hid the weapons in the dumpster or why. Agents with

the ATF say the upper receivers do not have serial numbers which makes them
difficult to track.

“The neighborhood is a decent neighborhood. Everybody’s pretty friendly, but

there are a few vagrants that come into the neighborhood,” said Jeremy
Withrow.

bacteria. It can also be harmful to humans if left on the skin.

Boaz Police say the Gilbreath did go to the hospital but is ok. They are now

North Korea Threatens Military Action Against South Korea

Posted: 26 May 2009 09:47 PM PDT

North Korea threatened military action in response to South Korea joining an

anti-proliferation program and said it’s no longer bound by the 1953 armistice

that ended the Korean War.

South Korea’s actions are tantamount to a “declaration of war,” the North’s official

said in a statement today. North Korea said it can’t guarantee the safety of ships
passing through its western waters near
the maritime border with the South.

[...]

“We will regard any intervention, searches or other minor hostile acts against our

peaceful ships as an intolerable violation of our sovereign rights and will
counter with an immediate and forceful military
strike,” the KCNA statement said.
