American journalist James Foley’s family reads like something out of a horror

Even before they beheaded Foley and Steve Sotloff on video, ISIS
was perceived by most Americans and much of the world as evil. ISIS fighters
didn’t just kill for pragmatic reasons, they seemed to absolutely revel in
bloodthirstiness: crucifixions, burying women and children alive, conversion or
death. But the manner of Foley’s and Sotloff’s murders and the
dissemination of the videos brought it home in an especially primal way for
America, engendering a rare degree of relative consensus on the fact that the
perpetrators of this act are very bad people indeed.
Comparing Arab Crimes against Humanity: Hamas
and ISIS
Evil has never been absent in the world, but sheer
evil has reappeared in the actions – "no why here" – in recent months
of two Islamist extremist groups: Hamas in Gaza, and ISIS or ISIL in Iraq and
Syria. The extent of the evil of the two groups differs in the number of
overt actions, but the intent to fulfill their objectives is similar.
Hamas has openly declared its main objective: to kill Jews and eliminate the

I was deeply offended by Afsun Qureshi’s suggestion that non-Muslims should be cognizant of Islamic prayers and inform themselves about the Koran, as a means of protecting themselves from jihadism.
I consider
myself better versed than the average person on the Koran and I must say that I
do not like much of what I read, especially in regards to what is has to say
about “infidels” and “kaffirs.” In any case, many Muslims, such as the Syrian
rebels and the murdered Fatah members in Gaza, knew the “shahada” perfectly,
but this knowledge did not save them from the lethal rage of their fellow
Muslims.
I am sure
Ms. Qureshi wrote her column with the best of intentions, but to a
Christian such as myself, for whom Allah remains a deity whose demands are at
odds with the values of a pluralistic society, it is not more knowledge of
Islam on my part that will help us, but more intramural activism on the part of
moderate Muslims urging Muslim extremists to respect other cultures and
religions that is needed.

Having read the
Koran in four different languages, and studied the Hadith, Arab philosophy and
other Muslim documents extensively, I can say with confidence that Afsun
Qureshi is wrong when she claims that, “for every violent passage in the Koran,
there is a peaceful message.”
The Meccan
portion of the Koran is admittedly milder than the subsequent, and far larger,
Medinan portion, which is filled with violent animadversions against infidels
and apostates. Though I have not calculated the precise ratio, the proportion
of the violent to the peaceful is overwhelming.
Further, Ms.
Qureshi does not mention the standard Islamic practice of nasikh, or
abrogation, by which later, generally violent, passages cancel earlier, more
passive, ones, as a means of avoiding contradiction. Radical Islamists have not
“warped the words” of the Koran, but are in fact reading it as intended. Ms.
Qureshi asserts that “a little knowledge would go a long way.” Unfortunately,
judging from her article, it does not go nearly far enough.

The arrogance
of Afsun Qureshi’s statements is deplorable. I have a little knowledge of the
Koran and I don’t like it. I don’t like the fact that I am classified as an

would change for the better if we had some kind of knowledge of the Koran and
Islam.” I suggest that Muslims have the same sort of knowledge of the Bible and

recite the shahadah, in order to save my life. Allah may be their one true
God, but he is certainly not mine. And a lot of good it did for those Syrian
men paraded through the desert to their death last week. Knowing
