Apparently the United States is suffering from a surplus of skyscrapers and passenger jet planes. The State Department is hoping that their program can stimulate the economy through some creative destruction.
The idea of “education diplomacy” has “really arrived” at the highest levels of American foreign policy, a US State Department official has told an international higher education conference.
Meghann Curtis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs at the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, said that the bureau had always been driven by the notion that “we’d be a more stable, peaceful and prosperous world if we could all get to know one another”. But she said that the issue had recently become “incredibly important”.
Everything is now being sold as diplomacy as long as it involves the Muslim world. We’ve already had Music Diplomacy and NASA Muslim Empowerment Diplomacy.
We’ve had huge numbers of Muslim students in the United States for a while now. Including half the Muslim Brotherhood. Morsi was educated here. It doesn’t seem to be make them like us. But then again they’re going to schools filled with professors who hate America as much as they do.
Engagement with the Middle East and North Africa, and other Muslim-majority countries, was a top priority to address a “big deficit” in mutual understanding, she said in a round-table session, “The importance of academic exchange in foreign affairs” at the Association of International Education Administrators annual conference in New Orleans.
“I was having a conversation with folks at the White House, in the policy shop over there, and this idea of education diplomacy has really arrived,” she said.
She also said programmes to bring students and scholars from Muslim-majority countries into the US had been “ramped up”.
Considering that’s how Obama got born, I’m sure the White House loves it. Still considering that flight schools are one of the biggest draws for international students and considering that we’re still in a war caught by a bunch of international students, maybe the State Department could be a little less enthusiastic about laying the groundwork for the next phase of the war?

We’ve only got so many skyscrapers to go around and New York City is only now finishing up the replacement for the ones that the last bunch of Muslim students destroyed.
