Another trans-Atlantic showdown is looming as the Trump Administration prepares its next tranche of financial sanctions on Iran, and the puzzle is why Europe keeps backing itself into a corner. Brussels and European Union states seem ready to stage a battle with Washington over an obscure but important financial-service network-against Europe's own interests.

Iran has dismissed threats from the United States to cut its oil exports to zero as a "political bluff," Reuters reported Wednesday, citing a report published by Tasnim news agency. Ali Kardor, the head of state-run National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), said President Trump "has done whatever he can" but knows Iran's oil exports won't be reduced to zero.

Iran's prosecutor general said Wednesday there would be no repeat of women watching football matches inside stadiums, saying it would "lead to sin." The comments by Mohammad Jafar Montazeri came a day after around 100 women were allowed to watch their country take on Bolivia in a friendly at the national stadium an extremely rare step in the Islamic republic.
