By refusing to take strong retaliatory measures against Saudi Arabia, the Trudeau government has telegraphed weakness.

As I’ve been saying for some time, the Trudeau government showed tremendous weakness by refusing to retaliate against Saudi Arabia after the Saudi’s hysterical overreaction to a poorly thought out tweet from failing foreign affairs minister Chrystia Freeland.

While Freeland’s tweet wasn’t a wise move, the Saudis were really using Canada to send a message.
So, when the Saudis overreacted and tried to make an example out of Canada, the Trudeau government should have been tough, cutting off all imports of Saudi oil, banning weapon sales to the Saudis, and ending all student-exchange programs.

But instead, the Trudeau government showed pathetic weakness, refusing to take any retaliatory measures, continuing the arms sales, continuing to import Saudi oil, and then asking for a meeting to patch things up.

It seems the Saudis now sense that weakness, since they are demanding a “Canadian apology” in order to ‘fix’ relations.

As reported by Bloomberg, here’s what the Saudi Foreign Minister said:

“What are we? A banana republic? Would any country accept this?” al-Jubeir said Wednesday at an event at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. “You owe us an apology. It is very easy to fix — apologize, say you made a mistake.”

Obviously, an apology should never be given, as it would represent Canada being humiliated. As we are now seeing, weakness comes with a serious cost, and foreign countries have sniffed out that weakness in the Trudeau government.
