Iranian
Funding Enables Weekend Rocket Attacks That Kill Four Israelis
(New
York, N.Y.)
- As a ceasefire takes hold between Israel and Palestinian terror
groups in the Gaza Strip, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is
exposing Iran's arming and funding of Palestinian militants and
inciting conflict.
Four Israelis were killed
over the weekend when Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hamas launched up to 600 rockets and
other projectiles into Israel. PIJ and Hamas both receive substantial
financial support from Iran and both are designed by the U.S. as
foreign terrorist organizations. PIJ has been directly supported by
Iran since 1987. Hamas, which has ruled by force in Gaza for more
than a decade, reportedly receives "tens of
millions of dollars" from Iran each year.
"Iran's dangerous
financial and material support is what allowed the launching of
hundreds of rockets into Israel and led to the tragic loss of
life," said UANI Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman.
"Last weekend's events demonstrate the importance of the Trump
administration's maximum pressure campaign against Iran--which seeks
to deprive the regime of revenues it uses to incite violence."
As part of its response to the rocket attacks, the
Israeli government announced the successful targeting of a Hamas
field commander, Hammed Ahmad al-Khudari, who had helped transfer
millions of dollars from Iran to Gaza militants.
In its report, Proxy Wars: Regional Dominance Strategy,
UANI documents how Iran supports both PIJ and Hamas as part of its
hegemonic ambitions. According to the U.S. State
Department, Iran has provided "various Palestinian terror
groups" $100 million per year. Specifically, Tehran has been
funding PIJ for more than 30 years and the group is extremely open about Iran being its main
supporter:
"All of the weapons
in Gaza are provided by Iran... the largest share of this financial
and military support is coming from Iran," said a PIJ spokesman
in 2013.
UANI's report, Iran's Ideological Expansion,
also demonstrates how the Iranian regime remains the region's
destabilizer-in-chief, preying on weak governance and economic
vulnerabilities to spread its revolutionary dogma throughout the Palestinian territories.
