Information is sketchy about an FBI raid at a slaughterhouse Sunday near the La Salle-Grundy County line.An FBI spokesman in Chicago said FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents executed a search warrant at 6260 Kinsman Road as part of an ongoing federal investigation.
No arrests were made. Kinsman, which has a population of about 110, is in Grundy County, about 18 miles southeast of Ottawa and 14 miles northeast of Streator. Published reports said witnesses reported seeing about 100 police officers participating in the raid.
At one point, some officers with drawn guns surrounded a man wearing Middle Eastern garb on the grounds of the property.
The address in question is owned by First World Management Services Inc., the president of which is Tahawar Rana, 6018 N. Campbell Ave., Chicago, according to state records.
The Times called the company Monday afternoon, but the woman who answered said she could not understand English well and begged off talking.
First World Management Services is connected to another Chicago company operated by Rana, Bios Zabeeha Halal Food. Zabeeha apparently refers to the ritual slaughter of animals in accordance with Islamic law. Halal refers to food that conforms with Islamic dietary law.
The Exelon Nuclear Plant near Seneca is about five miles from the slaughterhouse. The plant spokesman, Adam Slahor, told The Times Monday police told plant officials the Kinsman situation did not pose a threat to the plant. The plant has an armed security force. On Monday, The Times could not reach a Midwestern spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement; a message was left with a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
