Statement by UANI on French Shipping Company CMA CGM Ending Exports from Iran

New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following the statement regarding French shipping company CMA CGM's Wednesday announcement that it has ended its exports from Iran. UANI has been pressuring CMA CGM throughout the year, with a public campaign, billboard, Op-Ed, and research report.

For a year now, UANI has been calling on CMA CGM to end its business in Iran, given the regime's documented history of using shipping companies to illegally import nuclear technology and export arms to terrorist groups. On multiple occasions, CMA CGM vessels have been seized and found to contain such shipments.

We are pleased that CMA CGM has finally stopped exports from Iran and increased its screening processes, but given CMA CGM's checkered and dubious history of work in Iran it must go further and end all of its business there. By continuing to do work in Iran, CMA CGM is providing the regime with an economic lifeline, and risks violating international sanctions law. CMA CGM must fully pull out of Iran, and also cut its ties to Tidewater Middle East Co., an entity controlled by the Iranian regime's notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

There is no excuse for doing any business with the Iranian regime, and companies that continue to are not 'victims' of Iran's deceit, but complicit in Iran's activities.

Since March 2011, UANI has been calling on CMA CGM to end its business in Iran, where the regime has used shipping companies to transfer weapons and nuclear technology to and from Iran. At least three CMA CGM vessels have been seized and found to contain weapons headed to or from Iran.

In June, Ambassador Wallace and UANI board member Frances Townsend called on CMA CGM to end its business in Iran in a Washington Times Op-Ed. UANI also placed a billboard outside of CMA CGM's Norfolk, VA headquarters, reading "CMA CGM transports Iranian weapons bound for terrorist organizations. It's time to choose ... US OR THEM! TAKE ACTION AT UANI.COM."

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is a program of the American Coalition Against Nuclear Iran, Inc., a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran should concern every American and be unacceptable to the community of nations. Since 1979 the Iranian regime, most recently under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's leadership, has demonstrated increasingly threatening behavior and rhetoric toward the US and the West. Iran continues to defy the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations in their attempts to monitor its nuclear activities. A number of Arab states have warned that Iran's development of nuclear weapons poses a threat to Middle East stability and could provoke a regional nuclear arms race. In short, the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran is a danger to world peace.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is a non-partisan, broad-based coalition that is united in a commitment to prevent Iran from fulfilling its ambition to become a regional super-power possessing nuclear weapons. UANI is an issue-based coalition in which each coalition member will have its own interests as well as the collective goal of advancing an Iran free of nuclear weapons.

The Objectives of United Against a Nuclear Iran

  1. Inform the public about the nature of the Iranian regime, including its desire and intent to possess nuclear weapons, as well as Iran's role as a state sponsor of global terrorism, and a major violator of human rights at home and abroad;
  2. Heighten awareness nationally and internationally about the danger that a nuclear armed Iran poses to the region and the world;
  3. Mobilize public support, utilize media outreach, and persuade our elected leaders to voice a robust and united American opposition to a nuclear Iran;
  4. Lay the groundwork for effective US policies in coordination with European and other allies;
  5. Persuade the regime in Tehran to desist from its quest for nuclear weapons, while striving not to punish the Iranian people, and;
  6. Promote efforts that focus on vigorous national and international, social, economic, political and diplomatic measures.
UANI is led by an advisory board of outstanding national figures representing all sectors of our country.

In one of the more intriguing cases to emerge recently, male nurse John Benitez Jr. filed suit against the city of Dearborn, Michigan, for sex discrimination last week, charging that he had been terminated for tending to Muslim women at a government-run medical facility after receiving contradictory instructions about the need to adhere to gender separation:

Benitez, 63, of Madison Heights, worked at the city's taxpayer-funded health clinic. He alleges he was ordered by a female supervisor not to treat conservative Muslim women, specifically those wearing head scarves, according to the lawsuit. He was told the clinic's male Muslim clientele did not want a male treating female patients.

He complied until November 2010, when a doctor ordered him to treat Muslim women as he would any other patient. Benitez followed the doctor's order and was fired less than one month later, according to the lawsuit.

An Associated Press item clarifies that his former female supervisor is Muslim and "told Benitez to refer patients wearing hijab to her, rather than treating them himself." The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission gave the suit a green light in October.

Alarming on their own, the allegations also reinforce a pair of trends tracked by Islamist Watch:

· Islamism in Dearborn. Nobody should be surprised to hear such a tale coming out of this Detroit suburb, which has a large Muslim population and public entities known for bending over backwards to accommodate it. Examples include the University of Michigan-Dearborn installing foot-washing stations to aid Muslims preparing to pray, Fordson High School holding football practice from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. in 2010 to ease the Ramadan fast for Muslim athletes, and officials' repeated attempts to inhibit Christians from engaging in speech that might discomfort Muslims. Without a doubt, Dearborn is at the very center of the battle against Islamist encroachments in the U.S.

· Strife over gender mixing in medical settings. Hospitals and other health-related venues commonly spawn gender controversies, as rapidly moving events and limited resources can make male-female contact unavoidable. Two months ago, a Muslim woman demanded to see a female doctor in a Pennsylvania emergency room, but a male nurse declined the request and reportedly said that God would forgive her for being examined by a man; she left in a huff. Last year, relatives "attacked and kicked" a doctor trying to treat a woman at a Swedish hospital "because they objected to him being a male." An altercation involving medics even erupted at an Australian accident scene in 2009.

A court will need to weigh the veracity of specific claims made by Benitez against Dearborn, but his attorney's remarks are relevant well beyond the parameters of this one suit: "When you get to the point that taxpayer-funded entities are having to comply with personal religious beliefs rather than letting people do their job, you're going down a road that does not end in a good place."

Continuing GAO Campaign, UANI Calls on Italian Energy Company Edison to End Business in Iran

New York, NY - On Wednesday, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) called on Italian energy company Edison SpA ("Edison") to immediately cease its ongoing business activities in Iran.

This August, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) published a report based on open sources documenting that Edison is one of 16 firms currently active in Iran's oil, gas, or petrochemical sectors. The GAO specifically highlighted Edison's business activities in Iran's energy sector as being inconsistent with the provisions of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010 ("CISADA").

In a letter to Edison Chairman Giuliano Zuccoli, UANI President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, wrote:

Edison is involved in several ongoing projects in Iran that are of great concern to UANI. ... by its own account, Edison operates a Hydrocarbon Branch in Iran designed to expand Edison's hydrocarbon exploration activities in Iran. (Edison 2010 Annual Report). Of greater concern ... is Edison's continued involvement in the Dayyer Block and the $107 million exploration and development contract it signed with the National Iranian Oil Company ("NIOC") in 2008. ... Recent press reports indicate that Edison is seeking not only exploration but development partners as well. (Iranoilgas.com, "Edison seeking partners for Iran's Dayyer Block," 5/1/2010) If this is the case, Edison's involvement in Iran could extend easily into several decades.

****

An explicit goal of CISADA is to stop businesses from helping Iran develop its natural gas and petroleum sectors given the control exercised over those sectors by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ("IRGC"). The IRGC is a known terrorist entity in control of Iran's oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors. The IRGC is the Iranian government's branch in direct control of Iran's weapons of mass destruction programs, including its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The IRGC also 'bankrolls' groups in Iraq and Afghanistan that execute attacks against American and NATO servicemen. In fact, some 40 Italian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan by the Taliban, which is being actively supported by Iran. By working with NIOC and the IRGC to develop Iran's oil sector, Edison is directly contributing to Iran's capabilities to sponsor terrorism, kill and maim NATO servicemen and develop its weapons of mass destruction programs.

****

It is time for Edison to follow the lead of other responsible global corporations, including Caterpillar, Terex, ThyssenKrupp and Kia Motors, and send a strong message to the leadership in Tehran that the international community no longer tolerates its reckless behavior.

As part of its GAO Campaign, UANI recently called on South Korean conglomerate Daelim, also identified by the GAO, to end its business in Iran.

UANI requests a reply from Edison by December 12, 2011 regarding its existing and future business plans in Iran.

Those who wish to reduce America's nuclear arsenal imagine there is some other means of defense against nuclear-armed nations, when in reality only nuclear strength can deter.
