UANI Releases Iran VERITAS Project Documenting Iranian Regime Acts of Extremism, Violence, Repression and Terror Clearinghouse of Iranian Acts of Violence and Extremism Worldwide

New York, NY - Today, United Against Nuclear Iran is launching its VERITAS Project to inform the public about the Iranian regime's acts of violence, extremism, repression and terrorism at home and worldwide.

As the international community gathers in New York to discuss, among other things, strategies to counter growing radicalization and violent extremist movements; and as Iran and its supporters increasingly seek to characterize Tehran as a source of stability in Iraq and viable ally against extremist groups in the region, it is vital to recall Iran's record of using violent terrorism and repression to spread its radical and extremist ideology abroad and consolidate power at home.

In light of this record, depictions of Iran's leadership as 'moderate,' or as a potentially reliable counter-extremism partner are erroneous, short-sighted and dangerous.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's 35-year record of violence and extremism is clear. In pursuit of regional hegemony, Iran has used murder and terrorism to undermine stability and security in nations across the Middle East, causing tens of thousands of deaths. Peoples of varied religions, ethnicities, and nationalities in the Middle East, Europe and North and South America have suffered as a result of Tehran's radical ideology and disregard for human rights. For example, ethnic and religious minorities, gays, women, labor activists, and political dissidents have suffered repression, imprisonment and discrimination. Dissidents have been tracked down and murdered abroad by the regime.

And beginning with the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis, the Iranian regime has reserved a special animosity for the United States, killing more than 1,000 U.S. servicemen and civilians in devastating terrorist attacks like the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing and through terrorist proxies in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years.
