UANI Applauds
Congress for Passing Comprehensive Iran Sanctions Legislation
New York, NY -
United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI)
applauds Congress for passing the Comprehensive Iran
Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010 (the "Iran SAD Act"), which strengthens sanctions against
Iran. The Iran SAD Act includes key
provisions that preclude companies that do business in Iran from contracting
with the U.S. Government. Now, companies
covered by this legislation will have to choose between doing business with
Iran and doing business with the U.S.
UANI has been a longstanding advocate for the enactment of
the Iran SAD Act. Last June,
UANI introduced model legislation that would require companies that do business with
the U.S. Government to certify that they do not conduct business in Iran. In October, UANI worked directly with
Congressman Klein and Congressman Mica, to introduce the
Accountability for Business Choices in Iran Act (ABC Iran Act) which
is now incorporated in the Iran SAD Act.
Referring to the passage of the Iran SAD Act UANI President,
Ambassador Mark D. Wallace said:
We applaud Congress for passing legislation
that strengthens sanctions against Iran.
These sanctions are an important step in limiting Iran's ability to
enrich uranium and in ultimately preventing Iran from developing an illegal
nuclear weapon. Now, companies covered
by this legislation that do business with the U.S. Government must certify that
they are not conducting business in Iran.
By using the power of its purse strings, the U.S. Government can take
significant action to economically isolate Iran.
UANI has led campaigns against a variety of companies that
conduct business in Iran. Recently, UANI
has
targeted Honeywell for the business it conducts in Iran.
Honeywell is currently aiding Iran in the
development of the Arak Refinery, which will aid Iran's capacity to refine its
own oil. Honeywell is also a major U.S.
government contractor. UANI has
called on the U.S. Government to debar Honeywell from all U.S. Government contracts
until Honeywell ends its business in Iran. Of all companies that do business in Iran, Honeywell does the greatest
amount of business with the U.S. Government - more than $12.9 billion over the
past decade. Honeywell must choose
between doing business in Iran and doing business with the United States.
