UANI Calls on President Obama and Governor Romney to Commit to Not Use the "Easing of Sanctions" as a Bargaining Chip in any Negotiations with Iran
UANI Calls for Bi-Partisan Support for Full Economic Blockade

New York, NY - Today, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) called on President Obama and Governor Romney, in their final debate tonight, to commit to not entertaining the "easing of sanctions" until Iran fully and verifiably ends its nuclear program. UANI calls for bipartisan support for increased economic pressure and a full economic blockade on Iran.

Said UANI CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace:

In their final debate, President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney should make clear to the Iranian regime that the American people are united in opposing Iran's nuclear program and supporting strong economic measures against the regime. We ask the candidates to commit to:

1. Not using the "easing of sanctions" as a bargaining chip in any negotiations, but instead to only lift sanctions when Iran has fully and verifiably ended its nuclear program;

2. Support the most robust sanctions in history against Iran, based on an economic blockade that would force companies and countries to choose between doing business with the U.S. and its allies or doing business with Iran. The only exception to this blockade should be for legitimate humanitarian aid.

The cumulative effect of existing economic sanctions, which are not yet fully developed in scope or strength, has been Iranian hyperinflation. No serious policy should ease sanctions unless or until the Iranian regime agrees to fully and verifiably end its nuclear program.

On multiple occasions, the Iranian regime has used the promise of negotiations to buy time in order to further develop its nuclear program and avoid economic pressure. Now, Iran is using this same tactic to buy time during the U.S. presidential election and inauguration period. U.S. policymakers must not succumb to this tactic.

Our leaders must make clear to the Iranian regime that the U.S. and its allies will increase economic pressure, to make Iran's hyperinflation durable, and lead to the ultimate demise of the rial. Such an outcome is achievable through an economic blockade on Iran. Countries and companies worldwide must be forced to choose between doing business with the U.S. and its allies or doing business with Iran.

The prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran should concern every American and be unacceptable to the community of nations. Since 1979 the Iranian regime, most recently under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's leadership, has demonstrated increasingly threatening behavior and rhetoric toward the US and the West. Iran continues to defy the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations in their attempts to monitor its nuclear activities. A number of Arab states have warned that Iran's development of nuclear weapons poses a threat to Middle East stability and could provoke a regional nuclear arms race. In short, the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran is a danger to world peace.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is a non-partisan, broad-based coalition that is united in a commitment to prevent Iran from fulfilling its ambition to become a regional super-power possessing nuclear weapons.  UANI is an issue-based coalition in which each coalition member will have its own interests as well as the collective goal of advancing an Iran free of nuclear weapons.

The Objectives of United Against a Nuclear Iran
  1. Inform the public about the nature of the Iranian regime, including its desire and intent to possess nuclear weapons, as well as Iran's role as a state sponsor of global terrorism, and a major violator of human rights at home and abroad;
  2. Heighten awareness nationally and internationally about the danger that a nuclear armed Iran poses to the region and the world;
  3. Mobilize public support, utilize media outreach, and persuade our elected leaders to voice a robust and united American opposition to a nuclear Iran;
  4. Lay the groundwork for effective US policies in coordination with European and other allies;
  5. Persuade the regime in Tehran to desist from its quest for nuclear weapons, while striving not to punish the Iranian people, and;
  6. Promote efforts that focus on vigorous national and international, social, economic, political and diplomatic measures.
UANI is led by an advisory board of outstanding national figures representing all sectors of our country.
