Free Speech Under Fire in Canada

Pamela Geller was scheduled to speak at the Chabad Flamingo Synagogue in Thornhill, right outside of Toronto's city limits, on May 13. But now Islamic supremacist groups in Canada, with willing aid from the Canadian police, have succeeded in getting the event canceled under police pressure.  It is being relocated.

Toronto, Canada: Sharia 1, Free Speech 0

Commenting on the police action, Tarek Fatah, founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress, said, “What this incident shows is the depth of infiltration of Islamists in the police forces, both in Toronto, York Regions as well as the RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police]. One may disagree profoundly with Pam Geller, but the police have no right to shut down speaking events citing hate laws when hate against non-Muslims has become institutionalized in many city mosques where clerics pray for the defeat of non-Muslims at the hands of Muslims.”

Pamela Geller, tireless campaigner against Islamic imperialism was scheduled to give a speech at a Toronto synagogue on May 13th. Miss Geller is not a convicted terrorist or terrorism-supporter or someone who argues for the execution of all homosexuals. If she were, she could speak at any Canadian venue with impunity.

Terrorists can speak in Canada – Pamela Geller can’t

Very powerful letter written to York Regional Police Department by Salim Mansur, Vice-President of Council of Muslims Facing Tomorrow

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you this letter on hearing pressure applied to Rabbi Mendel Kaplan of the Chabad Flamingo Synagogue in Thornhill to cancel an event with Ms. Pamela Geller.

I am a Muslim, a tenured professor in a prestigious Canadian university, the University of Western Ontario in London. I am appalled that in this day and age we continue to hear regularly how the liberal democratic tradition of Canada and the West is being systematically shredded by institutions sworn to protect it. Free speech is the most fundamental right of a free society; constrain it, strip it, shred it, and then let us not be surprised our society will be turned into a society such as one from where I fled as a young man to find freedom in the West, and I remain ever grateful that Canada took me in and gave me the opportunity to pursue my own dreams.

I pray you consider any decision you make that ends up taking another step in undermining the tradition of free speech that made the West, and Canada as a part of it, the most flourishing, open, and free culture in the entire history of mankind. Each one of us are responsible that this tradition is preserved, protected, and passed on to the unborn generations what we inherited.

I submit your intentions might very well be of some merit as a guardian of law and order. But those pushing for preventing Ms. Pamela Geller from speaking by putting pressure on Rabbi Mendel to deny the use of his synagogue for holding her event are people I know very well. These are people, Muslims as I am, who come from cultures that have no respect for individual rights and freedoms enshrined in our constitution, and while making home here in Canada have no respect for the culture of this country. They need to learn the culture of a free society, of a society that is open to debates and discussions however painful this might be to someone else's sensibilities. But if you concede to their demands, all that you would be doing is indulging them, heeding their wishes and threats, and slowly, intentionally or not, bending Canada's tradition in the direction of the ruined cultures of these people which they have brought with them and want to push into our society.

I hope you will think hard and think clearly given your responsibility and defend the tradition of liberal democracy based on rule of law, individual freedom and free speech. I might just remind you that it was in defending this tradition that time and time again your compatriots went across oceans to distant places and were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice so that freedom there might take root by defeating the forces of tyranny. It often takes immense courage to do what is right, whether to refuse going to the back of a bus in a segregated society or protecting the right of someone to speak, especially when one disagrees with what might be spoken.

I pray God gives you the courage to do what is right in this instance.

Sincerely, Salim Mansur, PhD

Subject: Apologize to Pamela Geller and to Rabbi Kaplan

Dear Chief Jolliffe,

I was horrified but not surprised to hear of the decision by your department to put pressure on the rabbi who was scheduled to host anti-Islamist freedom fighter Pamela Geller when she came to Toronto. Have you ever heard Pamela Geller speak? She is a heroic person who stands up for the values of western society that have made Canada great: free speech, individual rights, freedom of religion, separation of church and state, women's self-determination, and minority rights. Radical Muslims do not like what she has to say because she challenges their vision of society, a vision in which all non-Muslims, and especially unveiled women, Jews, and homosexuals, are considered 'unclean' and treated as second-class citizens--that is, if they are allowed to live at all. Such people can be very vocal in defense of their rights not to be criticized or offended, and in your actions you have demonstrated that you are willing to comply with their demand that their 'sensitivities' and conviction of cultural superiority take precedence over others' free speech rights. Shame on you for that. You should immediately apologize to Ms. Geller and to the rabbi you threatened, and should tell your Muslim contacts that Canada is a country in which individual rights trump their sense of entitlement and that they'll have to get used to that if they want to continue to live happily in Canada.

But I don't suppose you will do that because you have obviously decided that appeasing bullies, especially Muslim bullies, is the best way to appear progressive and to have an easy time of it. You know that hordes of angry Jews and libertarians will not soon be causing trouble for your force. What is happening, however, is that many ordinary people such as myself are losing faith in the police. I now believe that the police force no longer, by and large, exists to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens. I was once a huge supporter of the police; and I still feel a great deal of respect for individual officers who risk their lives in the line of duty every day. But for you, with your expedient political decisions, I can have only contempt.

Attached is an article detailing the spread of anti-Semitism across Europe and the United States that Pamela Geller is attempting to resist. Perhaps you should educate yourself on the serious issues we now confront in our society as a result of Muslim radicals before you criticize an event in the (laughably misguided) name of 'tolerance.'

Sincerely, Janice Fiamengo

Raheel Raza and Salim Mansur, president and vice president respectively of  the Council of Muslims Facing Tomorrow, weigh in on the latest terrorist plots, arguing that these “confirm the pattern of penetration by Islamists into the West for executing mass terror attacks.” The West, they conclude, needs to take seriously the war declared by Islamists against infidels, Zionists, Israelis and Muslims opposed to Islamism.
Terrorism: Follow the Money

Terrorism requires money.  Money does not grow on trees. Cut off the money, we cut terrorism off at the knees.

Mosques are the battleground of the war between Islam and the West
What are mosques? Gavin Boby from the Law and Freedom Foundation in the U.K. answers as follows : “Mosques are not like churches or synagogues:  they are far more than houses of worship and contemplation, many of them are centers of jihadist activity that indoctrinate to commit and support violence against infidels. In America, as many as 4 different studies have independently come to the same conclusion that 80 per cent of US mosques "were teaching jihad, Islamic supremacism, and hatred and contempt for Jews and Christians.”

Recently the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), released an 18-point platform for defending freedom. It called for "surveillance of mosques and regular inspections of mosques in the U.S. and other non-Muslim nations to look for pro-violence materials. Any mosque advocating jihad or any aspects of Sharia that conflict with Constitutional freedoms and protections should be closed."
