KATIE HOPKINS has angrily condemned the religious slaughter of animals – labelling it as cruel and wrong.

The controversial Hopkins claims Britain cannot present itself to be a nation which respects animals while permitting practices such as halal and kosher.
The killing of the animal in religious slaughter traditionally involves a single cut to the throat, as opposed to the more common use of stunning with a bolt into the head.
Speaking on her LBC show: "We are a country that is supposed to be so right on… There are so many things we have to be careful of.
"We’ve got health and safety coming up all over the place.

"We have ways of treating people written down. We have laws protecting the human rights of people.
"We have vets that look after cats and dogs.

Hopkins' tirade triggered an angry response on social media, with several individuals slamming the religious slaughter of animals.

"I agree with you Katie it’s horrific," tweeted Michelle Rothwell.

Another posted: "This cruelty must end."

Sarahjoy88 argued: "The slaughter of all animals is cruel. There is no humane way to kill things. So stupid!! Go vegan!!"

Harriet Attias added: "Any slaughter is inhumane surely #vegan."

The government has regulations in place for any animal slaughter for halal or kosher meat.
Anyone carrying out the slaughter is required to keep back-up stunning equipment close by so it can be used immediately if an animal "experiences avoidable pain, suffering or agitation" or if it has been injured.

In February 2014, Denmark signed into law a regulation which banned the slaughter of animals without proper stunning.

The move was criticised in some quarters at the time but praised by animal rights groups.
Peta said: "No religion needs to slaughter animals for food, and banning certain slighter methods in which cows and other animals have their throats slit while still sensate is a step in the right direction."
