I came to Rome to participate in an international conference on violence against women which was an Initiative of the Italian Presidency of the G8. The participants were smart, serious, principled, educated, eloquent, practical, courageous, energetic and beautiful; they wore vibrant colors, stunning jewelry, multi-colored headgear and hijab.

The men were very smart too, and compassionate, and they talked about their work to restore the facial identities of Muslim women who had been disfigured beyond all recognition by acid attacks and savage beatings, and about the importance of enforcing human rights for all, even for women, especially for women. But they all wore quiet suits, and sported no riotous hats, no flashy jewelry.
