Eco-terror – 2 Radio Towers Toppled in Washington

Two radio station towers near Seattle that have generated
intense local opposition were toppled early Friday in an act of sabotage
that bore the initials of the radical Earth Liberation Front.

The towers for KRKO-AM – one of which was 349 feet tall – were
torn down because of health and environmental concerns, according to an
e-mail from the North American ELF Press Office, which has represented the
shadowy group in the past.

“We have to weigh our priorities, and the local ecosystem in
Everett, along with the local residents, do not need additional sports
news radio station towers that come at the expense of reduced property
values and harmful radio waves,” ELF press office spokesman Jason Crawford
said in the e-mail.

The ELF is a loose collection of radical environmentalists that
has claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks since the 1990s. A banner
that bore the initials of the ELF was left at the scene, authorities
said.

The FBI has taken over as lead investigator in Friday’s
incident, and agent Marty Prewett said authorities haven’t found any
evidence that other individuals or groups besides the ELF were
involved.

The towers apparently were taken down with a track hoe, a piece
of heavy construction equipment that was already on the site, Prewett
said.

Wanted in North Carolina, American Disappears in Pakistan

On Saturday in Pakistan, a young American recently charged by
authorities in North Carolina with leaving the United States to engage in
“violent jihad,” failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance. As
The Lede noted on Friday, Jude Kenan Mohammad was arrested and then
released on bail by Pakistani authorities last year, after he attempted to
enter a tribal area along the Afghan border but before any charges were
filed in North Carolina, where he now stands accused of being part of a
ring of would-be jihadists.

The Associated Press reports from Peshawar, Pakistan on
Saturday:

Kamal Khan, senior assistant to Judge Nasirullah Khan in
Charsadda district, said Mohammad’s trial was supposed to start Saturday
but that neither the accused nor his lawyer nor any other representatives
appeared.

Top Terror Suspect Freed Over Secrets Fear – UK

suspect

The Home Secretary has released a man regarded as one of
Britain’s most dangerous terror suspects from virtual house arrest to
avoid disclosing secret evidence against him, The Times has learned. The
man, known only as AF, has been subject to a controversial “control order”
since 2006 because of his alleged links with Islamic terrorists. He has
never been charged, however, and the evidence for the allegations has
never been heard in a public court.

The control order was revoked last week and the suspect’s
electronic tag removed, setting him free in spite of the Government’s
claim that he remains a threat.

Lord Pannick, QC, who led the legal team acting for the man in
the House of Lords, said: “The Home Secretary has some explaining to do.
Does he now accept that there was no need for the control order which
imposed severe restrictions on AF . . . or does he still think there is a
need for controls but is unwilling to provide details of the allegations
against AF? If the latter, does he accept that the control order regime is
defective and should be scrapped?”

AF, who has dual Libyan and British nationality, was one of
three terror suspects who won a landmark ruling from nine law lords in
July that their detention under the control order regime was illegal. The
law lords ruled that the suspects had been denied a fair hearing prior to
detention because they had not been told sufficient details of the case
against them.

The ruling paved the way for up to 20 men held under the regime
to challenge their detention and to seek to know the basis of the case
against them.

Cyanide Suspected In Sickening 7 L.A. Firefighters

As the fire and homicide investigation continues, officials say
several firefighters were exposed to cyanide gas in two separate incidents
as they were mopping up hot spots near the small city of Acton on the
northern edge of the massive blaze.

The poisonous cyanide fumes are suspected in acute breathing
problems suffered by Los Angeles firefighters battling the Station Fire in
the Aliso Canyon. One firefighters suffered life-threatening respiratory
arrest and remains in hospital after she was knocked out by noxious fumes
on Sept. 1 near Acton.

Two days later, six firefighters suffered severe breathing
difficulties in another part of the Aliso Canyon.

“On Sept. 1, a firefighter working on the Station Fire in the
Aliso Canyon area of Acton was overcome by noxious fumes,” said the Los
Angeles County Fire department. “The firefighter suffered respiratory
arrest and was taken to a local medical facility for further treatment and
evaluation.”

The firefighter remains in hospital.

“On Sept. 3, six firefighters were transported to a local
hospital after being overwhelmed by unknown fumes in a different part of
Aliso Canyon. The firefighters were treated and released,” said a
statement.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department HAZMAT unit
responded to the two separate areas of Aliso Canyon to investigate the
cause of the respiratory illnesses,” officials said.

After examining the sites, the Sheriff’s HAZMAT personnel
detected trace cyanide concentration of 48 parts per million in the Alison
Canyon area.

“In the area where the six firefighters were injured, the
Sheriff’s HAZMAT unit found smoldering spots of fire, but no contamination
traces of chemicals. The HAZMAT unit also found galvanized materials,
baling wire, cans and bottles.

“During the investigation and rehabilitation, the sites of both
the inhalation injuries have been cordoned off and secured.

Medical personnel have been advised of the Sheriff’s HAZMAT
unit findings,” said a press release issued in Los Angeles on
Saturday.

Authorities do not have an idea where the cyanide came
from.

From The Los Angeles Times

Officials said 10 firefighters had been taken to a
hospital in two separate incidents, in which it appears they had
stumbled upon hazardous materials. At one of those sites, health
officials detected cyanide and one firefighter remains in the hospital.
Officials are still not sure where the cyanide came from.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has said investigators
are probing the deaths as homicides. A source told The Times that
“material that didn’t belong there” has been found at the site suspected
to be where the fire started, a twice-scorched slope cordoned off by
crime scene tape near Mile Marker 29 along Angeles Crest Highway.

The source would not identify the suspicious substance but
said it was found in the brush off the highway, within walking distance
of the turnoff at the center of the arson probe. The source, who spoke
on the condition of anonymity because it was an ongoing investigation,
said the substance was taken to a lab for testing. The material is not a
device, according to the source.

Man Pulled Over with Pipe Bombs, Weapon

A New Haven man is under arrest after police found pipe bombs
and a weapon in his vehicle late Saturday. Marlon Reddick, 44 was stopped
by West Haven Police last night around 11:00 p.m. in the area of Elm
Street and Kimberly Avenue for equipment violations.

During the motor vehicle stop, officers observed a clear
plastic bag containing pills in the passenger compartment of the
vehicle.

After Reddick claimed no knowledge of the pills, the officers
asked him to exit the vehicle as they continued their investigation,
according to a police report.

As officers searched the vehicle, they discovered a duffle bag
behind the front seat. An officer observed a metal cylinder from the
duffle bag and upon closer inspection observed it to have a wick. The
officers believed the item was an explosive, and immediately removed
themselves and Reddick from the area.

The immediate area was shut down to local and highway traffic
while New Haven Police Department’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene.
The bomb squad located two improvised explosive devices in the duffle bag
and confirmed they were homemade bombs. The bomb squad rendered the
devices safe.

Roads in the area were closed for approximately five hours.

Also located in the vehicle were a sawed off shotgun, bullet
proof vest, dark colored clothing and a ski mask. The vehicle, an older
model Ford F150 truck has been impounded and the investigation is
continuing.
