IT’S TIME TO TAKE THE BLINDERS OFF AND GET TOUGH ON NATIONAL SECURITY By Lisa Piraneo, Director of Government Relations These are dangerous times. A December 23rd Time Magazine article by Bobby Ghosh proclaims that “2009 saw an unprecedented surge in terrorism events on U.S. soil.” With each new incident, Americans have looked to the federal government to respond in a way that will make our nation safer…our national security stronger. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. In the words of U.S. Senator Susan Collins, “the Obama administration appears to have a blind spot when it comes to the War on Terrorism.” This week, the U.S. Congress will once again be focusing on the issue of health care, with the President’s impending “health care summit.” We must send a message to our federal elected officials: Health care is an important issue, but just as important is protecting our nation and our Constitution from Jihadists. It’s time to take the blinders off and get tough on national security. As part of a Keep America Safe coalition, ACT! for America has been instrumental in the effort to remove New York as the venue for the Khalid Sheikh Mohammed trial, and to ensure that all enemy combatants are tried in military tribunals. Although there are indications that the Administration is considering reversing course on the New York venue, it is by no means a “done deal.” And although the American public has demanded again and again that enemy combatants not receive the same judicial rights as you and I, there is no indication that the Administration is listening. Another deeply concerning matter is the recent admission by Director of Intelligence Dennis Blair and National Counterterrorism Center Director Michael Leiter that intelligence officials were not consulted before FBI agents read Islamist Abdul Mutallab his Miranda Rights. Abdul Mutallab is an enemy combatant, not an “alleged criminal” with constitutional rights to due process. He should have been interrogated as an enemy combatant in order to obtain intelligence regarding his fellow enemy combatants. As the largest national security grassroots organization in the country, others are looking to us on these critical matters. Thank you for all of your past efforts. Please take a moment TODAY to e-mail the following message to your U.S. Representatives and Senators. (NOTE: Personalizing this message is even better): Dear Representative/Senator _______, As your constituent, and member of ACT! for America, I am extremely concerned about how both the Administration and the leadership in the U.S. Congress are addressing national security issues. In particular, I am very troubled by the decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and other enemy combatants in federal/civilian courts instead of military tribunals, and to arrest Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, a jihadist who tried to blow a U.S. airliner out of the sky, as a civilian instead of as an enemy combatant. It is clear by their policies that our current Administration is lumping U.S. citizens together with enemy combatants. This must stop. As the election in November draws nearer, I will be watching to see how you act and vote on national security matters such as these. What are your thoughts on these incidents? Specifically, I would like to know your answer to the following two questions: Will you join in efforts to oppose funding for civilian trials? And do you agree or disagree with the position that foreign terrorists are enemy combatants, rather than alleged criminals? Thank you for your attention to my concerns.
