An FBI agent shot and killed a man who was being investigated as part of the Boston bombings early Wednesday morning.

Officials said the special agent was conducting official duties when he encountered 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev, an Orlando Fox New affiliate and CBS News reported.

Todashev had been questioned on Tuesday by the FBI because he knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev and had visited him in Boston before the bombings.

CBS News correspondent John Miller, a former FBI assistant director, says the victim was “someone (the agency was) looking at in connection with Tamerlan, based on contacts they had.”

The shooting happened at Todashev's apartment in Orlando, Florida.

A man at the scene who identified himself as a friend of the victim to WOFL Fox 35 in Orlando said the man knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the 26-year-old man suspected in the April 15 bombings that killed three and injured more than 260.

Khusen Taramov told Fox he and his friend had no connection with the Boston bombings, but the FBI had been questioning them since then.

"He used to talk on the phone with him [Tsarnaev]," Taramov said of his friend. "They talked last time a month ago. After bombing, I couldn't believe it," he said.

"The FBI kept asking, 'What's the connection?' But there is no connection ... no connection."

Taramov said the victim had planned to return to Chechnya, but canceled his tickets.

"Me and him and my friends we knew this was going to happen. That's why he wanted to leave the country," Taramov said. "But he canceled the tickets. The FBI's been pushing him, 'Don't leave, don't leave.' So he decided to stay.”

The FBI had questioned Taramov earlier Tuesday but was allowed to leave, Taramov said. When he came back, he found out his friend had been shot dead, he said.

"The FBI knows what happened," Taramov said.
