UANI Statement on President Obama's Letter to Iranian Supreme Leader and Iranian Stonewalling of IAEA
President Obama's letter reportedly raised the possibility of a U.S.-Iran alliance against the Islamic State (ISIS) on the condition that Iran reaches a settlement with the P5+1 on its illicit nuclear program.
UANI CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace issued the following statement:
The suggestion that Iran could be a potential security partner is not realistic in light of Iran's role in encouraging sectarianism and extremism in the region.
While basic sectarian distinctions suggest that Iran shares U.S. concerns regarding the rise of ISIS, Iran's record of opposing U.S. efforts to stabilize Iraq and Afghanistan demonstrates clearly that any partnership would be ill-advised.
The U.S. should instead be focused solely on efforts to ensure that Iran addresses the fundamental and long-standing concerns of the international community regarding the danger of its nuclear program.
Just today, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran is again stonewalling the Agency by failing to provide clarifications and explanations of its past nuclear weapons work. Specifically: "Iran has not provided any explanations that enable the Agency to clarify the outstanding practical measures, nor has it proposed any new practical measures in the next step of the Framework for cooperation."
The issue of ongoing Iranian intransigence memorialized in the IAEA report is compounded by the numerous additional outstanding concerns of the international community regarding Iran's ballistic missile program, illicit procurement networks and, of course, the size and scope of its enrichment program.
Discussions that deviate from the all important goal of holding Iran accountable for its continued defiance of the international community regarding the extent of its nuclear program, or its support for violent sectarian and extremist groups will only further inflame regional conflicts.
