Britain to build TWO MILE fence to control flood of illegal immigrants from France

BRITAIN is set to ramp up the fight against illegal immigrants – by erecting a two-mile fence known as the 'Ring of Steel'.

The high-security fence will be installed around the Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles, France, where a flood of migrants currently board trains to Britain.

Work on the 9ft high fence will begin this week, according to Immigration Minister James Brokenshire, and is likely to finish in July.

The fence has been used to protect high-profile events such as last year's Nato summit in Newport, Wales, and the 2012 Olympic Games.

Now it is hoped it will protect cars and lorries leaving Coquelles from desperate stowaways determined to reach the UK.

The dramatic intervention comes after it was revealed that the number of stowaways entering Britain has doubled.

The figures rubbish Home Office claims that freight traffic travelling from northern France to ports in Dover is being "100 per cent" checked.
Last September Brokenshire slammed the "inadequate" fencing at Calais, saying it was "too easy for illegal immigrants to scale".
He said: "Obviously it's up to the French to maintain security and order on their own soil, but we want to do what we can to help.
"We offered the port of Calais £3million three months ago to help improve security.
"Now offer our French partners the fences that were used this week to keep the Nato summit safe in Newport.

Yesterday Home Secretary Theresa May said she wanted to send a "very clear message" to migrants looking to reach Britain.
She said: "We are working very closely with the French authorities on this issue.
"We have been doing a number of things to increase security around the port.
"We are making a number of changes at Calais to increase security, we're also going to be putting some extra security fencing at Coquelle at the entrance to the Tunnel."
