News Coverage of the 2018 Iran Summit

"While Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was calling Trump a 'Nazi' and a bully in his speech at the United Nations on Tuesday, several top Trump administration officials were laying out the U.S. policy path at the conference of United Against a Nuclear Iran, a nonprofit organization that opposed the Iran deal."

"Mr. Bolton and Mr. Pompeo spoke at the annual meeting of United Against Nuclear Iran, a group deeply critical of the nuclear deal. Mr. Bolton, who once served on the group's board, was cheered repeatedly as he delivered one blistering attack after another against Iran and Europe."

"In an even more fiery speech to a group opposed to the Iran deal, Bolton was to go further. 'If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay,' he was to say according to prepared remarks released by the White House ... Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also spoke at the event hosted by United Against a Nuclear Iran being held to coincide with U.N. General Assembly. In his speech, Pompeo unveiled a long list of Iranian misdeeds from its support of Syrian President Bashar Assad and Houthi rebels in Yemen to sponsoring or plotting attempted terrorist attacks in Africa, Asia, Europe and beyond."

"US national security adviser John Bolton issued a stark warning to Iran Tuesday, demanding changes in Tehran's behavior and threatening there will be 'hell to pay' if they don't happen ... 'So, I might imagine they would take me seriously when I assure them today: If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat, and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay,' Bolton said at the United Against Nuclear Iran Summit, held on the margins of the UN General Assembly."

"National Security Adviser John Bolton delivered a no-holds-barred warning to Iran at a major summit in New York on Tuesday, telling the regime in a fiery speech that 'we are watching, and we will come after you' and that there will be 'hell to pay' if it continues on its current course ... Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also spoke at the UANI summit on Tuesday, and criticized other nations for 'enabling' Iranian-sponsored terrorism by working with Iran to bypass U.S. sanctions."

"America's top diplomat had harsh words for Europe and its fellow remaining members of the Iranian nuclear deal after it was announced they would develop a financial mechanism to bypass U.S. sanctions and continue doing business with Iran. Speaking to the conservative lobbying group United Against a Nuclear Iran during the UN General Assembly meetings, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday he was 'disturbed and indeed deeply disappointed' by the European Union's decision to create a 'special purpose vehicle' (SPV) designed to allow trade with Tehran in euros, which would eliminate the need for commercial and central banks who fear U.S. penalties."

"The European Union's plans for a 'special purpose vehicle' (SPV) designed to circumvent U.S. sanctions against Iran's oil exports is deeply counterproductive, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday. 'Unfortunately, just last night I was disturbed and indeed deeply disappointed to hear remaining parties in the Iran (nuclear) deal announce they are setting up a special payment system to bypass U.S. sanctions. This is one of the most counterproductive measures imaginable for regional global peace and security,' Pompeo said at conference. 'By sustaining revenues to the regime you are solidifying Iran's ranking as (the) No. 1 state sponsor of terror.'"

"U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani exchanged taunts at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday with Trump vowing more sanctions against Tehran and Rouhani suggesting his American counterpart suffers from a 'weakness of intellect.' ... Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, addressing a group called United Against a Nuclear Iran, called the 2015 accord 'the worst diplomatic debacle in American history' and had a warning for 'the mullahs in Tehran.'"

"Furthermore, the red-hot rhetoric used by Trump and his advisers at this week's U.N. meetings may widen the rift over Iran, rather than rallying allies to America's side. Take, for example, the threats leveled by Trump's national security adviser John Bolton. 'The days of impunity for Tehran and its enablers are over,' Bolton said in a speech Tuesday to United Against Nuclear Iran, a group that supports a more hardline approach. 'The murderous regime and its supporters will face significant consequences if they do not change their behavior ... We are watching, and we will come after you.'"

"Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton served as the administration's attack dogs on the issue. While Iran met with the remaining parties of the JCPOA at U.N. headquarters Monday, both men spoke Tuesday off-campus at not a U.N.-sponsored event, but a summit organized by the political group United Against a Nuclear Iran."

"US President Donald Trump takes his campaign to isolate Iran to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, chairing for the first time a meeting that will lay bare divisions between Washington and key allies ... Meanwhile, Trump's national security advisor John Bolton warned Tehran of 'hell to pay' if it threatens the US or its allies. 'If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens, if you continue to lie, cheat and deceive; yes, there will indeed be hell to pay,' he said, speaking at a gathering hosted by the group United Against a Nuclear Iran, held on the margins of the General Assembly."

"National Security Adviser John Bolton issued a striking rebuke to Iran Tuesday, warning its leaders that there will be 'hell to pay' if they endanger U.S. citizens or allies ... Bolton directed his warning to the 'murderous regime' of 'mullahs in Tehran,' BBC reports. 'If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat, and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay,' Bolton said at the United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Summit. 'Let my message today be clear: We are watching, and we will come after you.'"

"National Security Adviser John Bolton and Sec. of State Michael Pompeo dismissed announcement by European Union, China and Russia to set up a financing channel for legitimate business with Iran, saying U.S. wouldn't allow sanctions to be evaded. Countries that set up such financing vehicles will 'do so at their own risk,' Bolton says in speech before the group United Against Nuclear Iran in New York. Bolton says SWIFT financial messaging service should take a 'good hard look at their business with Iran.'"

"National security adviser John Bolton has warned Iran of 'hell to pay' if it harms U.S. citizens or allies. Bolton directed his comments at the 'murderous regime' of 'mullahs in Tehran.' 'If you cross us, our allies, or our partners; if you harm our citizens; if you continue to lie, cheat, and deceive, yes, there will indeed be hell to pay,' Bolton said Tuesday at the United Against Nuclear Iran Summit. 'Let my message today be clear: We are watching, and we will come after you.'"

"Mr. Pompeo will focus on two of the administration's core foreign-policy priorities. He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at a Tuesday summit hosted by United Against Nuclear Iran, a group that is critical of the 2015 nuclear accord. Mr. Bolton also is scheduled to address the group."

"Also on Tuesday, Mr. Pompeo, White House national security adviser John Bolton and Mr. Hook will speak at a conference held by United Against a Nuclear Iran, a group that opposed the nuclear accord. The foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Iran's regional rivals, are among the others scheduled to speak at the event."
