Canadian Censorship, Eh!
It’s official: conservative commentator Ann Coulter, a famously slightly built woman who travels with a bodyguard to protect her from leftist kooks, is a threat to the Peace, Order, and Good Government of Canada.
As Kathy Shaidle has documented, François Houle, vice-president academic and provost at the University of Ottawa sent Coulter a threatening letter prior to her scheduled speech at the school. In the letter he warned Coulter to watch what she said lest she find herself charged with hate crimes.
Coulter showed up in Ottawa to give the speech but it was canceled after rowdy leftist students caused havoc on campus.
Canada’s human rights laws, which for the most part were written by leftists, bear more than a passing resemblance to the politically correct speech codes that vex American college students.
Such oppressive laws are almost certainly in America’s future if it continues down the path of Obamaism. Remember that radical leftists like President Obama don’t believe in freedom of speech for those with opposing views. That’s why the president installed left-wing totalitarian Mark Lloyd as Fairness Doctrine czar.
Meanwhile, embarrassed at having become the laughingstock of the Western world, the University of Ottawa has already done an about-face. The school released this statement:
The University of Ottawa has always promoted and defended freedom of expression. For that reason, we did not at any time oppose Ann Coulter’s appearance. Whether it is Ann Coulter or any other speaker, diverse views have always been and continue to be welcome on our campus.
University president Allan Rock, who was attorney general in the government of left-winger Jean Chrétien, furiously tried to distance himself from the school’s previous declaration. Rock said the University of Ottawa was a “safe and democratic environment for the expression of views, and we will keep it that way.”
“The University of Ottawa has always promoted and defended freedom of expression,” the university said in a statement. “For that reason, we did not at any time oppose Ann Coulter’s appearance. Whether it is Ann Coulter or any other speaker, diverse views have always been and continue to be welcome on our campus.”
Environmentalist whackjob Robert F. Kennedy Jr. decided to use the opportunity to piggyback off Coulter’s notoriety. He gave a speech to the University of Western Ontario calling Coulter someone who “really represents the darkest side of American character.”
Kennedy is a huge supporter of using wind-based power generation, except off Cape Cod where it would ruin his view of the ocean. Kennedy is the nephew of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), killer of Mary Jo Kopechne.
