Reuters: "Iran denied a report that it is ready to help counter Islamic State insurgents in return for progress in negotiations with world powers over its nuclear program... On Thursday a story from the official Iranian News Agency (IRNA) cited by several news organizations including Reuters reported Foreign Minister Javad Zarif as saying that if Iran agreed to 'do something in Iraq, the other side in the negotiations will need to do something in return'. 'All the sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear activities should be lifted in return for its help in Iraq,' it quoted him as saying. But later on Thursday IRNA reported foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham as dismissing 'reports by some news agencies about Iran and U.S. cooperation in Iraq'. 'These reports are a misinterpretation of the foreign minister's remarks and are totally baseless,' IRNA reported her as saying." http://t.uani.com/1q4GD5J

IHR: "57 prisoners have been executed since August 3 (in less than 3 weeks) in Iran. 13 of the executions have been carried out in public. One man was hanged in public in the city of Qazvin today... Another prisoner was hanged in the Motaheri Square of Khoi (Northwestern Iran) reported the news website Uromnews." http://t.uani.com/1sa0Pm3

Al-Monitor: "Iran's parliament has published a list of 24 violations they accuse Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of committing and requested the judiciary to pursue the cases, a move that appears to be aimed at thwarting Ahmadinejad's plans for a return to politics. Some of the more serious cases appear to be accusations that his administration used government-subsidized exchanged rates for the import of luxury cars, a rate that is reserved for the purchase of vital goods, involvement in an attack on speaker of parliament Ali Larijani during his speech in Qom in February 2013 and the illegal borrowing of money through the Central Bank." http://t.uani.com/1plzuPy

Sanctions Relief

Just-auto: "Scandinavian automotive supplier body, FGK, says it is looking to lead a delegation of its members to Iran early next year as the current draconian sanctions regime against Tehran starts to loosen its grip. Automotive in particular has been granted temporary relief from some of the West's harshest targeting, with the thaw having already seen French supplier association, FIEV, visit Iran with a view to reviving Paris' historic partnership with Tehran. Ahead of the trip, FKG will host a session at its annual suppliers Forum in Gothenburg later this October, titled: 'Iran - Old New Market' which the Iranian Ambassador will also attend... '[The] UK did absolutely the right thing, to open the Embassy in Tehran,' FKG managing director, Fredrik Sidahl, told just-auto on the sidelines of the inauguration of Sweden's new active safety proving ground in Gothenburg yesterday (21 August). 'It was the right thing to do.' ... Sidahl noted Volvo Bus used to enjoy significant business in Iran and had expressed an interest in the country." http://t.uani.com/1q4HjYF

Domestic Politics

FT: "The water that disappeared - a result largely of mismanagement and overuse rather than drought - is stored at the Zayandeh Roud dam and diverted for domestic and industrial consumption, leaving the city's 11 river bridges standing as symbols of what is missing. Residents say the loss is overwhelming. 'When I see the Zayandeh Roud dried, I feel I am drying, too,' says Fereydoun, a 27-year-old taxi driver. The choking of the river has had a profound effect on a city that was built around the Zayandeh Roud in the same way that London grew up around the Thames and Paris around the Seine. But Isfahan's plight is just one example of a water crisis in a country gripped by 14 successive years of drought." http://t.uani.com/1ohPYTD
