The Islamic State (IS) militants claim to have shot down an Iranian plane in Diyala province, northeastern Iraq.
On Monday, IS released a short video
purporting to show that they shot down the Iranian jet in Diyala
Province of Iraq, on the border with Iran.
The Shahin jet is manufactured in Iran and has a range of 150 km.
The video, published on a website with
links to IS insurgents, shows militants standing next to the downed jet
shouting “Allah u Akbar.”
However, IS does not explain how the aircraft was shot down.
In Diyala, there are heavy clashes
between IS and the Iraqi army, in cooperation with Shiite militia groups
and Iranian military advisers. The joint forces are commanded and
supervised by Iranian Quds Force Commander Major General Qassem
Soleimani.
In June, IS insurgents took control of
many areas in Diyala and Nineveh provinces in northern Iraq, but
recently many areas have been freed by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and
the Iraqi army with support of US-led coalition airstrikes.
