CAIRO – Thirty-six Egyptian soldiers and civilians as well as 38 Islamic State group militants were killed in attacks and clashes in the Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday, security and medical officials said.
The officials said most of those killed by militants were soldiers.
Some reports says up to 15 military bases were attacked.
The jihadists attacked checkpoints and engaged in firefights with the army and police in a north Sinai town.At least 20 people were killed Wednesday in a series of attacks on security forces in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula claimed by Islamic State group militants, state media reported.
The jihadists launched simultaneous attacks against military checkpoints in the region, one with a powerful car bomb, the authorities said.
“It’s war. The battle is ongoing,” a senior military official told AFP.
Other security and medical officials said ambulances could not get to the scene of the attacks because of heavy fighting in which the military brought in Apache helicopters.
