TURKISH border guards intercepted a car packed with suicide belts and explosives yesterday, amid fears extremists could be hiding among refugees fleeing the war in Syria.

The seizure is likely to increase concern in Europe that jihadis are exploiting the migrant crisis to smuggle themselves and their weapons into the continent.

The army said in a statement: "Between 12 and 15 kilos of explosives and four belts that could be used for suicide attacks were found in two bags."

A group of 34 people, including four men, 10 women and 20 children, were stopped in Turkey's southeastern border town of Karkamis.
