Syrian refugees in Germany seek relocation to Canada
Syrian refugees in Germany have recently been expressing an increasing interest in moving to Canada, CIJnews was told.
The number of Syrians in Germany is estimated at around 360,000 people in December 2015 and consists mainly of refugees of the Syrian Civil War.
Family members residing in the Greater Toronto Area have
been requested by the Syrian refugees in Germany to help them find a
way to move to Canada as refugees or even in an illegal way.
The uncertainty about their future in Germany, the
restrictions imposed on refugees and financial hardships because of
unemployment were mentioned as the major motives for seeking relocation.
In a effort to crack down on terrorism, the German government has introduced
in last August new anti-terror laws which if approved will strip the
German citizenship from dual-nationals who join terrorist groups and
will may it easier for authorities to deport migrants who commit crimes.
CIJnews was also told the UN offices in Turkey have
prepared new lists of Syrian refugees who are candidates for receiving a
refugee status in Canada.
Since November last year, 30,136 Syrian refugees have arrived
in Canada of whom 16,218 Government-Assisted Refugees, 2,918 Blended
Visa Office-Referred Refugees and 11,000 Privately Sponsored Refugees.
14,000 Syrian refugees settled in Ontario. John McCallum, Minister of
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said earlier this year that the
number of Syrian refugees who will be resettled in Canada in 2016 will
reach close to 50,000.
