Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps: 40 Years of Spreading Terror, Quashing Dissent for Iran's Theocracy

(New York, N.Y.) - On May 5, 1979, Iran's revolutionary government formed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), its premier paramilitary force responsible for revolution abroad and repression at home. As carefully documented by United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), the IRGC's legacy after 40 years is one of murder, mayhem, and meddling. The group has rightfully earned its place on the U.S. government's list of foreign terrorist organizations.

Since its inception, the Islamic Republic of Iran has used the IRGC to aggressively "export" its Islamic Revolution and remake the Middle East under its domination. One of its defining hallmarks has been its willingness to use terrorism against the U.S. and its allies. In addition to carrying out direct attacks, the IRGC has facilitated terrorism by providing funding and training to proxy groups like HezbollahHamas, the Taliban, and the Houthis, as well as to militias in Iraq, Syria, and Bahrain.

The IRGC is also an important player in Iran's economy, by some estimates controlling as much as 20 percent. UANI has warned for years that doing business in Iran often means doing business with the IRGC, because the group is so heavily involved in so many Iranian industries. Businesses and banks around the world now have a clear responsibility to ensure that companies with which they do business are not connected to the IRGC in any way.
