Job Announcement: Legal Project Director


The Middle East Forum, a think-tank based in Philadelphia, seeks a director for the Legal Project, its 2-year old activity to protect researchers and analysts working on terrorism, terrorist funding, radical Islam, and Islam from those who would restrict their exercise of public free speech. Responsibilities:



  • Recruit and maintain pro bono legal team relations.

  • Seek out cases for LP, match attorneys and legal firms, and brief outside counsel on cases.

  • Handle inquiries from individuals and institutions interested in LP's services.

  • Promote LP through media appearances and public lectures.

  • Fundraise for LP, including for a client escrow account.

  • Write op-ed pieces and law journal articles.

  • Maintain a news service concerning Islamist lawfare.

  • Expand the LP website with articles and announcements that relate to Islamist lawfare, as well as a blog section, and documents of interest to researchers.

  • Cooperate with U.S. government officials seeking to enact federal legislation protecting Americans against predatory foreign defamation judgments, as well as working with government officials abroad concerning "libel tourism."

  • Establish an Advisory Board to select and review cases.

  • Provide regular updates on activities to management.


In addition, the director serves as legal counsel for both the Legal Project and the Middle East Forum.


Qualifications:



  • Interest in, and commitment to, the work of the Middle East Forum.

  • A law degree and admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state.

  • Knowledge of Constitutional law and First Amendment issues.

  • Some knowledge of Middle East affairs and politics.

  • Experience in fundraising and reporting on projects.

  • A record of public writing and speaking.

  • Standard computer skills.

  • Work abilities that include taking initiative, meeting deadlines, showing attention to details, and working on multiple projects simultaneously.


Location:


The successful candidate is invited to work from the Forum's office in Philadelphia, but may work from anywhere via Internet connection.

The Middle East Forum seeks to promote American interests in the Middle East and protect the Constitutional order.


U.S. interests in the Middle East include fighting radical Islam; working for Palestinian acceptance of Israel; robustly asserting U.S. interests vis-à-vis Saudi Arabia; and developing strategies to deal with Iraq and contain Iran.


Domestically, the Forum combats lawful Islamism; works to improve Middle East studies in North America; and (specifically through the LP) protects the freedom of public speech of anti-Islamist authors, activists, and publishers.
