Medical Advice On Lockerbie Bomber ‘In Doubt’

Posted: 27 Aug 2009 02:37 AM PDT

Justice secretary Kenny MacAskill was last night under pressure
to reveal more details of the medical evidence that led to the release of
the Lockerbie bomber, after it emerged that only one doctor was willing to
say Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi had less than three months to
live.

Labour and Conservative politicians have demanded the Scottish
Government publish details of the doctor’s expertise and qualifications,
amid suggestions he or she may not have been a prostate cancer expert.

The parties have also raised questions over whether the doctor
was employed by the Libyan government or Megrahi’s legal team, which could
have influenced the judgment.

The evidence provided by the doctor is crucial as compassionate
release under Scots law requires that a prisoner has less than three
months to live.

Doubts about Megrahi’s life expectancy have already been raised
by American relatives of the 270 victims of the bomb that blew up Pan Am
flight 103 over Lockerbie on 21 December, 1988. But last night the
Scottish Government said it would not publish details of the individual
who gave the crucial advice.

Mr MacAskill has said he based his decision to release Megrahi
on the opinions of a range of experts.

But this is contradicted by a decisive report sent to Mr
MacAskill on 10 August.

New Taliban Leader Threatens US To Avenge Baitullah’s Death

Pakistan’s Taliban have threatened to avenge the death of their
leader in a US missile strike, as experts warned Wednesday of possible
attacks by a new leadership keen to prove its strength. Hakimullah Mehsud
late Tuesday declared himself new chief of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
(TTP) militia, confirming for the first time that Baitullah Mehsud was
killed this month.

‘We will take revenge and soon. We will give our reply to this
drone attack to America,’ Hakimullah Mehsud told AFP.

On Wednesday another Taliban leader, Wali-ur Rehman, backed
Hakimullah’s claim and said he had been appointed rebel chief in the
insurgent stronghold of South Waziristan.

‘Myself and the whole of the Taliban movement announced its
support for Hakimullah. He is now our new head,’ said Rehman.

Lawrenceville Bio-terror Laboratory Fails Inspection

Posted: 27 Aug 2009 02:16 AM PDT

Allegheny County’s $5.6 million bio-terror laboratory in
Lawrenceville has failed an inspection, delaying once again the opening of
the facility that was finished in 2007 but has been beset by an assortment
of delays, poor construction and breakdowns.

An independent inspector, Larry Milchak, cited the lab for
faulty alarms signaling a power failure and poor seals around doors and
other areas of the biosafety level-3 lab that could allow contaminated,
potentially deadly air to leak out.

The Allegheny County Health Department has moved workers into
other parts of the 10,000-square-foot facility and hopes to have the
500-square-foot “Lawrenceville” lab fixed, reinspected and operational in
time for the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh Sept. 24-25.

The BSL-3 laboratory is outfitted with special ventilation
systems, equipment and safety features that allow it to test for bioterror
agents like anthrax, plague and botulism. Passing the inspection allows it
to become part of the federal Laboratory Response Network.

Although the lab will have the capacity to handle the worst of
pathogens, the bulk of its work will involve regular county testing for
infectious disease.
