Nigerian mother tells of her children's slaughter

In a hospital in Nigeria's central city of Jos, Chindum Yakubu recalls the moment her 18-month-old daughter was snatched from her back and hacked to death with a machete.

"We were sleeping when we heard gun shots around 2 a.m. I strapped my youngest baby on my back and ran out of the house, but ran into the Fulani attackers," she said Tuesday.

She tried to escape but tripped and fell to the ground.

"They removed the baby and killed her with a machete. I could hear the screams of my baby when they attacked her," the 30-year-old said.

Violence erupted before dawn on Sunday when attackers armed with machetes, axes and daggers swooped on the mainly Christian villages of Dogo Nahawa, Ratsat and Zot, near Jos.

The rampage has been blamed on Fulani pastoralists, who are Muslim, and a feud with the Christians.

Yakubu was beaten with clubs and left for dead. Half of her head is now clean-shaven and a deep cut on her scalp is sutured.

Yakubu is also mourning a seven-year-old son who was killed in the slaughter.

She is not alone. The Plateau State Specialist Hospital is full, mostly with wounded women and children.

While the state government has said 500 were killed, rights groups and local media have said between 200 and 400 died and police put the toll at 55.

The governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, has accused the military of ignoring warnings of the violence, saying he alerted a commander to armed gangs moving into the area on Saturday night.
