PHILADELPHIA – The Middle East Forum is pleased to announce the appointment of Sam Nunberg as director of the Legal Project, the Forum's initiative to defend the free speech rights of authors and activists discussing Islam and related topics.

Mr. Nunberg previously served as deputy director of government affairs for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) as well as a delegate to the U.N. for the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ). In the latter capacity, Mr. Nunberg worked on legal and policy measures concerning the State of Israel, the International Criminal Court (ICC), promotion of sanctions against Iran, international human rights, and First Amendment jurisprudence

Mr. Nunberg played a significant role in the Ground Zero Mosque controversy, both at the New York City Landmark Commission hearing and in subsequent legal actions instituted by the ACLJ. He advocated against the ICC prosecutor's consideration of the Palestinian Authority's attempt to transfer jurisdiction to the ICC under the Rome Statute and the legal conclusions of the Goldstone Report. Mr. Nunberg also played a critical role in the ECLJ's opposition to the Organization of the Islamic Conferences "Defamation of Religion" resolutions in both the 64th and 65th U.N. General Assembly sessions.

Welcoming Mr. Nunberg, MEF director Efraim Karsh observed that Mr. Nunberg "will bring an enterprising and bold approach to combating Islamists' growing encroachment on Western freedom of speech."

"The Middle East Forum has been at the forefront of educating the American public on the domestic and international Islamist threat," Mr. Nunberg said. "As director of the Legal Project, I look forward to continuing its critical mission of defending anyone discussing Islam."

The Middle East Forum, a Philadelphia-based think tank, is dedicated to promoting American interests in the Middle East and protecting the Constitutional order from Middle Eastern threats through intellectual, activist, and philanthropic efforts.
