The U.S. is preparing to unleash air strikes on areas of Iraq under the control of Sunni militant group ISIS, as thousands of Shiites join 'peace brigades' to defend Iraq's holiest sites.
President Barack Obama said he will not send combat troops back to Iraq - but added that he is prepared to take 'targeted military action' and deploy 300 'military advisers' to the war-torn country.
The 'targeted military action' Obama refers to is believed to mean air strikes against ISIS militants and on strategic targets - such as checkpoints and supply routes - that have fallen under their control.
His comments came as jihadist militants surrounded Iraq's largest oil refinery after a day of intense fighting as Peace Brigades called for by the radical Shiite cleric Muqtatda al-Sadr were held in the southern holy city of Najaf.
