Hug A Terrorist

A campaign appearance by some pro-palestinian activists in Canada’s McMaster University has sparked outrage by many university students.

The campaign called ‘Hug a Terrorist,’ is based on a You Tube video that sees two children wearing Palestinian garb pose with a sign that says ‘Hug a terrorist’ hoping that a passerby will stop and start a conversation.

The university’s Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights group organized the event, hoping to bring awareness to the innocents that were killed during the Israel Hamas war this past summer. Hamas has been accused of using innocent civilians as human shields, which resulted in so many of them being killed.

The groups president, Yara Shoufani, said that the campaign seeks to “put a face to the children who, every day, are facing harsh realities of the (Israeli-Palestinian) conflict.”

But many students were outraged at the provocative stunt. Jacob Klugsberg, a fourth-year McMaster student, said he was “shocked and outraged” after learning of the controversial campaign.

“This language completely trivializes and undermines the severity of international terrorism and the suffering that it causes victims and all those impacted,” he wrote in an email to The Spectator Wednesday.

David Sweet, a Member of the Canadian Parliament, tweeted on Thursday “Agree with McMaster student Jacob Klugsberg that Hug a Terrorist campaign on the campus is outrageous and poorly timed!”

Adam Moscoe, a Jewish student at the university said that he’s deeply offended by this stunt. “As a Jewish Canadian who wants to see a peaceful resolution to the Middle East conflict and the creation of a Palestinian state in which human rights are protected, I am deeply offended by this campaign,” Moscoe said.

“They are most welcome to, and they should, raise awareness about the tragic loss of civilian lives in the Middle East conflict and inherent rights violations,” he added. “Yet encouraging McMaster students to embrace terrorism gives a boost to some of most obscene rights violators — terrorists — while running roughshod over fundamental Canadian values.”
