Anti-ISIS cartoons in Iran
TEHRAN
Over 1,000 cartoons lampooning Islamic State (IS) have been received by authorities organising a competition in Iran.
270 selected works of art are on display
in four cultural centres across the capital Tehran, and a winner will
be announced at the end of May.
The contest is being organised by House
of Cartoon. Executive secretary Mohammed Habibi told the state run Press
TV, “Nowadays everyone around the world knows about the parasite by the
name of IS and what crimes they have committed against humanity and art
and culture. Artists now have the duty to raise public awareness about
this group by participating in such events.
There are plans for the cartoons to go
on the road, with exhibitions slated for Iraq, Syria and Lebanon,
according to graphic artist Massoud Shoajaei Tabatabaii.
“In order to reveal the true nature of
[IS], we decided to hold this contest and have people submit their
cartoons or caricatures. [IS] tries to associate itself with Islam but
in essence it has no idea about Islam.”
