Iran's Breaching of Uranium Limit Demonstrates Inherent Weakness of Nuclear Deal

(New York, N.Y.) - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released the following statement regarding Iran's deliberate breaching of the stockpile limit for low enriched uranium-surpassing 202.8 kilograms-an action that demonstrates the inherent weakness of 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA):
"Iran's violation of the JCPOA is a reminder that the nuclear agreement is fundamentally flawed," said UANI Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman. "The ease with which Tehran can restart its nuclear program underscores the fact that the international community was merely 'renting' Iranian compliance with the agreement in return for real up-front cash and concessions. The regime complied with its obligations only so far as it served its two-pronged objective of sanctions relief and recognition of its domestic nuclear infrastructure. It is time for the international community to join the United States' maximum pressure campaign to force Iran back to the negotiating table for a stronger agreement that will truly protect our security."

"If the signatories to the JCPOA ignore this violation, it will only encourage additional breaches by Iran in the future," said UANI CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace. "The announcement of Iran's violation comes one year after Iranian agents attempted to bomb a peaceful gathering of regime critics outside Paris. Blatantly provocative actions like these show clearly why it is time for Europe, Russia, and China to support the crafting of a new deal-comprising nuclear and non-nuclear issues."

UANI has cautioned since 2015 about the ease with which Iran's nuclear program could be restarted, which was one reason the organization opposed the JCPOA. Under the agreement, restrictions on Iran's stockpile of low-enriched uranium were set to expire by 2030.

Exceeding the uranium enrichment limits isn't Iran's first violation of the broader nuclear deal. Iran has been violating United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSC) 2231-which enshrined the nuclear deal-since 2015, specifically its arms embargo and ballistic missile limitations.

Iran's nuclear stockpile violation, however, should not be viewed outside the context of the broader comprehensive threat Iran poses to the world. Europe is uniquely threatened by Iran's malignant behavior. This week marks the one-year anniversary of the thwarting of Iran's bomb plot outside Paris targeting a rally of a dissident group, where former U.S. and European officials were participating.
