Allegation – MI5 Recruited Al Qaeda Sympathizers

Posted: 02 Aug 2009 12:41 AM PDT

mi5_headquarters

MI5 mistakenly recruited al Qaeda sympathisers who were trying to
infiltrate the British secret service, it has been alleged.

Conservative MP Patrick Mercer is demanding a probe into claims six
Muslims were thrown out of MI5 because of concerns about their past.

Two of the six allegedly attended al Qaeda training camps in Pakistan
while the others had unexplained gaps of up to three months in their
CVs.

Mr Mercer, counter-terrorism sub-committee chairman, told Sky News that
MI5 is believed to have detected two sympathisers at a “fairly early
stage” of their secret service training.

The others allegedly did not make it through vetting procedures.

However, Mr Mercer wants clarification on how successful the security
services have been at detecting enemy infiltrators.

Daniel Pearl Killer Believed Captured In Pakistan

Posted: 01 Aug 2009 06:53 PM PDT

In a major catch, Pakistani authorities today nabbed a top militant
suspected of beheading the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in
2002.

Rao Shakir, a suspected member of banned Sunni militant group
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, was arrested from Bhara Kahu on the outskirts of the
federal capital late last night, police said.

The militant is believed by the police to be closely linked to al-Qaeda
and Taliban groups and their commanders.

Pearl was abducted from Karachi in 2002 while doing a story on militant
funding. His remains were later found in a grave on outskirts of the port
city.

Shakir is also linked to several terrorist strikes, including a suicide
attack on a bus of a spy agency, the suicide bombing of the Marriott Hotel
last year and an attack in Rawalpindi.

Officials said police had been hunting for Shakir for a long time.

Armed Woman Arrested Taking Pics of National Guard Base – NY

Authorities say a Long Island woman armed to the teeth with an assault
rifle and shotgun was arrested for scouting out and taking pictures of an
Air National Guard base in the Hamptons.

Suffolk County Undersheriff Joseph Caracappa said Nancy Genovese, 53,
of Quogue, was arrested for trespassing outside the Gabreski Airport ANG
facility Thursday night. The department of Homeland Security and the FBI
are also investigating.

Caracappa said Genovese was caught taking photographs of the perimeter
of the base. A search of her car uncovered an arsenal an XM-15 assault
rifle, a shotgun and 500 rounds of ammunition.

This wasn’t the first time Ms. Genovese observed taking pictures of
the base, according to the sheriff’s department. When Deputy Sheriff
Robert Carlock arrived at the scene Thursday night, he was told by
members of the Air National Guard that she had been warned for several
weeks to stay off of the airport property. She had reportedly been seen
several times taking pictures along the perimeter of the base. An
off-duty Southampton Town Police officer recognized Ms. Genovese when
she returned to the base Thursday night.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the
Department of Homeland Security were notified by the sheriff’s
department. Spokesmen for both agencies have announced that they will
launch their own investigations.

Ms. Genovese is due in Southampton Justice Court again on August
7

LaGuardia Airport Reopens After Bomb Scare

Posted: 01 Aug 2009 06:33 AM PDT

laguardia-airport

Authorities temporarily closed one of the terminals at New York’s busy
LaGuardia airport on Saturday morning and took a man into custody after
discovering what turned out to be a fake bomb in his bag.

Most of the airport’s main terminal was closed at 5:30 a.m./0930 GMT
and travelers were allowed to return about 3 1/2 hours later. Jack Kelly,
a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the
terminal’s Concourse C, where the man was taken into custody, would remain
closed until a crime scene investigation had been completed.

Kelly described the suspect as emotionally disturbed and said his bag
contained batteries and wires. A police bomb squad was called in and local
media reports described the bag’s contents as a fake bomb that was not
dangerous.
