From The Road and 2012 to Colony and Day One,
Apocalypse Movies and TV Shows Dominate

A new crop of Hollywood disaster flicks coming this fall
deal not with the fall of civilization but the struggles of
post-apocalyptic survivors.

A flood of postapocalyptic stories is now headed toward
movie theaters and TV screens: Expect to see characters fending off
cannibals, picking up day-to-day survival techniques and struggling to
maintain their humanity amid the ruins. Previous waves of pop-culture
disaster, from the Atomic Age paranoia of “War of the Worlds” to
Watergate-era flicks such as “The Towering Inferno,” have depicted
calamity in stunning detail. Many of the new projects, however, actually
skip the spectacle of doomsday. Instead, they’re more fixed on what goes
down in the aftermath.

In “The Book of Eli,” a movie scheduled for January,
Denzel Washington plays the fierce protector of a book that holds the
key to mankind’s redemption in an American wasteland created by a war 30
years earlier. “Day One,” a series coming to NBC in March, follows a
handful of neighbors trying to survive and understand a calamity that
erased the world’s infrastructure. “The Colony,” now airing on Discovery
Channel, is a reality show set in an imagined end-times period in which
contestants hunt for food, water and shelter after a presumed
disaster.

NSA – National Security Agency Could Add 11,000 Workers

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 12:15 AM PDT

national-security-agency-nsa

The National Security Agency is planning to double the size of
its headquarters at Fort George G. Meade in an expansion slated to bring
more than 11,000 workers to the Anne Arundel County military base.

Its plans are large enough to rival National Business Park, a
285-acre private development built by Corporate Office Properties Trust in
Annapolis Junction. And for Fort Meade, it will generate nearly twice as
many jobs as the Pentagon’s much-publicized Base Realignment and Closure
plan, slated to bring an estimated 5,700 workers to the base.

The NSA wants to expand onto about 236 acres of land adjacent
to its headquarters at Fort Meade — a plan that would comprise three
phases and span 20 years. The agency now has about 2.6 million square feet
at Fort Meade. Its first phase of construction is slated to include 1.8
million square feet for up to 6,500 government workers.

The secretive spy agency, which employs about 36,000 people and
has a classified budget said to be in the billions of dollars, is being
asked to take on an increasing amount of duties under the Obama
administration.

Homeland Security, Defense Depts. Plan Domestic Operations?

The Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security recently
notified law enforcement agencies and associations, such as the National
Association of Chiefs of Police, about the Obama Administration’s interest
in using the military during “emergencies.”

Government officials reported that the Department of Homeland
Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator W. Craig
Fugate met with the Commander of the US Northern Command, General Gene
Renuart, to discuss “pre-disaster planning, response and recovery in
support of the federal response to the 2009 hurricane season as well as
wild fires, floods and other potential disasters.”

The meeting reinforced the important relationship between the
two organizations and focused on the operational role of US Northern
Command and what resources and skills they bring to any major Federal
effort related to all-hazards preparedness, response, recovery and
mitigation. It was also an opportunity to meet operational leaders who
would fill key positions in those support efforts.

“NORTHCOM plays a vital role in disaster response in support of
state and local officials,” Fugate said. “I am impressed by their
commitment to teamwork and interoperability. They are leaning forward and
are solutions-oriented partners among the nation’s emergency response
team.”

“We are committed to teaming with and supporting our civilian
partners,” added Renuart. “If our federal partners, state and local
officials are successful in responding to contingency operations, then
ultimately we a

Homegrown Jihadis – Alleged Terrorist Ring Raises Questions

Posted: 02 Aug 2009 03:18 PM PDT

Whatever the alleged terrorists arrested last week were up to,
it wasn’t meant to take place in North Carolina or anywhere else on
American soil.

Federal indictments say the men conspired to “advance violent
jihad, including supporting and participating in terrorist activities in
specific locations outside the United States. …”

That’s one bit of good news, although it’s frightening enough
if they were at work building a network in North Carolina, stockpiling
weapons and training for action. They allegedly had plenty of firepower.
Defendant Daniel Patrick Boyd purchased a dozen or more firearms, the
indictment states, including military-style assault rifles. Some of the
weapons allegedly were used for training exercises in Caswell County this
summer.

The other good news is that members of this group apparently
failed to achieve their goals, despite making trips to Israel, Gaza,
Jordan, Pakistan and Kosovo. So, were they really committed to violent
objectives or just playing terrorist? What were their actual
capabilities?

Those aren’t the only unanswered questions. Though the Justice
Department announced that seven individuals were charged, and the
indictment names seven men, there was an eighth defendant who wasn’t named
and who apparently is being sought in Pakistan.
