The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, has long been accused of having ties to terrorists. Now the group may be facing its most serious charges yet.Four Republican lawmakers, led by Rep. Sue Myrick of North Carolina, are calling for a federal investigation into CAIR.
At a press conference on Capitol Hill, they cited explosive new documents contained in a new book about CAIR called "Muslim Mafia."The book's authors, P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry, obtained a CAIR strategy memo from 2007 that calls for the group to exert greater influence on Capitol Hill.CBN News Senior International Reporter Dale Hurd has more on the controversy surrounding CAIR. Click play for his comments following Erick Stakelbeck's report.
That memo reads in part:"We will focus on influencing congressmen responsible for policy that directly impacts the American Muslim community. (For example, congressmen on the judiciary, intelligence and homeland security committees).
We will develop national initiatives such as lobby day and placing Muslim interns in Congressional offices.
"Myrick and the other lawmakers are calling for three things:
1. For the Department of Justice to give specifics on why CAIR was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal terrorism trial in 2007 in which the defendants were found guilty of funneling money to the terrorist group Hamas.
2. For DOJ to investigate whether CAIR has been successful in implementing its "strategic plan" to place staffers in congressional offices.
3. An IRS investigation into CAIR's non-profit status.CAIR employees have been convicted on federal terrorism charges. Some of its leaders have openly supported Hamas and called for America to become an Islamic state. The FBI severed all ties with CAIR last year.
