UANI Issues Statement in Response to MAN SE
German Firm is Directly Involved in Building Tankers for Iranian Regime

New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement today in response to German engineering and automotive firm MAN SE, which responded to UANI's campaign by stating that its business in Iran complies with EU sanctions:

MAN must immediately and completely end its Iran business activities, particularly those related to the construction of new Iranian tankers. MAN's claim that its current work with the Iranian regime technically complies with EU sanctions is weak and insufficient. Moreover, MAN's Iran business is clearly irresponsible, unethical, and in direct contravention of international efforts to isolate the Iranian regime and degrade its capacity to transport crude oil.

MAN's attempt to justify its Iran business through legal parsing is unacceptable. The U.S. and EU are attempting to economically isolate Iran, particularly by hampering its shipping industry, and companies such as MAN that continue to aid the regime are significantly interfering with those efforts. Businesses can no longer defy the efforts of governments and private entities to isolate Iran without facing serious reputational and financial consequences. MAN must immediately clarify its involvement in the construction of new vessels for the Iranian regime.

UANI's call for MAN to end its business in Iran was reported by the German newspaper Die Welt, Reuters, Agence France-Presse, and Trend.az. As Die Welt reported: "After researching, UANI said MAN should end the construction of at least five other ships for the state shipping company IRISL, which is also on the sanctions list. Today, IRISL has several private limited companies in Hamburg. MAN's Iranian partner in this business is said to be the Persian Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation, a company that is controlled by the regime."

UANI's "Germany Campaign" highlights the extensive Iran business activities of German businesses, firms and entities. German businesses are bolstering the Iranian economy and expanding Iranian industrial capacity at a time when the international community is working to economically isolate the Iranian regime.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is a program of the American Coalition Against Nuclear Iran, Inc., a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran should concern every American and be unacceptable to the community of nations. Since 1979 the Iranian regime, most recently under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's leadership, has demonstrated increasingly threatening behavior and rhetoric toward the US and the West. Iran continues to defy the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations in their attempts to monitor its nuclear activities. A number of Arab states have warned that Iran's development of nuclear weapons poses a threat to Middle East stability and could provoke a regional nuclear arms race. In short, the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran is a danger to world peace.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is a non-partisan, broad-based coalition that is united in a commitment to prevent Iran from fulfilling its ambition to become a regional super-power possessing nuclear weapons.  UANI is an issue-based coalition in which each coalition member will have its own interests as well as the collective goal of advancing an Iran free of nuclear weapons.

The Objectives of United Against a Nuclear Iran
  1. Inform the public about the nature of the Iranian regime, including its desire and intent to possess nuclear weapons, as well as Iran's role as a state sponsor of global terrorism, and a major violator of human rights at home and abroad;
  2. Heighten awareness nationally and internationally about the danger that a nuclear armed Iran poses to the region and the world;
  3. Mobilize public support, utilize media outreach, and persuade our elected leaders to voice a robust and united American opposition to a nuclear Iran;
  4. Lay the groundwork for effective US policies in coordination with European and other allies;
  5. Persuade the regime in Tehran to desist from its quest for nuclear weapons, while striving not to punish the Iranian people, and;
  6. Promote efforts that focus on vigorous national and international, social, economic, political and diplomatic measures.
UANI is led by an advisory board of outstanding national figures representing all sectors of our country.
