Companies wondering what to do about business in Iran are stuck trying to interpret language from the Trump administration indicating that waivers from sanctions, while continuing for now, won't be renewed again. Lawyers and sanctions experts told Risk & Compliance Journal that their clients are expressing anxiety while they await further guidance from the U.S. government on what it will allow under the nuclear agreement...  "There is enormous uncertainty and confusion, and you have a lot of reluctance to use existing authorizations because it's complicated," said Jonathan Poling, a partner at the firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP.

European countries have stepped up the pressure over Iran's ballistic missile programme and its role in regional conflicts as they struggle to respond to President Donald Trump's threat to junk a landmark nuclear deal with Tehran. The German, French and British foreign ministers - together with Federica Mogherini, the EU's foreign policy chief - agreed with Iran to hold an "intensive and very serious dialogue" on Tehran's missile programme and regional influence, the foreign ministry in Berlin said.

German authorities searched premises linked to 10 suspected Iranian spies following extensive investigations by the country's domestic intelligence agency, prosecutors said Tuesday.

UANI IN THE NEWS

The popular uprisings in Iran make it a sure bet that the Islamic Republic's government will eventually collapse. That possibility in a nuclear Iran should have many in Washington losing sleep. What will happen to Iran's centrifuges, enriched uranium, warhead designs and ballistic-missile technologies if the mullahs are toppled? What will happen to Iran's scientists who are suddenly unemployed? Western governments should prepare.

IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi called for efforts to make the most of the 4-month countdown until the US administration's possible move to withdraw from the JCPOA... "This four-month period is very vital," he said, adding that Iran should boost its economic links with Europeans, East Asians and the trade partners during these four months to strengthen the nuclear agreement.

The EU said Tuesday it is "carefully assessing" Donald Trump's statement on the Iran nuclear deal after the US leader set a 120-day deadline for fixing "disastrous flaws" in the landmark 2015 accord.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz chaired on Tuesday a cabinet session that hailed US President Donald Trump's recent stance on the Iran nuclear deal, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA)

IRAN PROTESTS

While the recent unrest in Iran has eased, discussion on its various aspects - including its causes and implications - is still heated and ongoing among domestic as well as foreign analysts and observers. One important part of the debate about the reasons behind the protests is what some refer to as the "foreign policy angle." The argument is that slogans such as "Leave Syria alone, think about us," which were heard during the protests in Tehran and other cities, is a representation of the Iranian people's discontent over the direction of the Islamic Republic's foreign policy, and especially the level of its involvement in regional crises. As such, the reading is that Iranians are urging the government to adopt a more inward view, redirecting its financial sources toward satisfying their economic needs.
